Trading Can Work In Destiny, Here's How

Note: This is not about gifting. Typically, when discussing trading, one of the biggest arguments against it is the potential for players to gift items to other players. That isn't trading. Trading can work in Destiny, and it can improve one of the biggest shortcomings of the game, which is that, when a player moves beyond a particular tier of gear or when a player acquires duplicate gear or when a player just doesn't want the gear he or she acquires, the only option is to dismantle it for materials. That's just not very interesting. Not only do players not have any options to consider, but the activity is simplified to holding a button down for a few seconds. With House of Wolves, Bungie is giving the Speaker the ability to exchange materials for us. We can trade ascendant energies for shards, or radiant energies for shards, etc. Trading in Destiny could work in a similar fashion. How it could work Create a vendor in the Tower that two players can go to for the purposes of trading. This vendor could be called the "Trade Arbiter" or something. Essentially, Bungie could work out a hard exchange rate for every item, ensuring nothing is given for free or unreasonably cheap. For instance, you have two Gjallarhorns, and your friend has none. You both go to the Trade Arbiter, and you say to him, "I would like to trade my spare Gjallarhorn to my buddy." He turns to your buddy and says, "The required trade offering for a Gjallarhorn is 10 motes of light, 10,000 glimmer, and 1 exotic shard." Your friend hands over the goods. You approve of the transaction. The stuff is swapped between players. Everyone is happy. You don't shamefully have to waste the most desired weapon in the game because there's literally nothing else for you to do with it. And your friend gets to see what all of the fuss is about. Why we need this As I state above, it's a bummer to get these great weapons that we can't really do anything with. We need options for what we can do with gear that we don't want or need. Currently, players who have progressed to end-game content are junking the vast majority of drops, and that's just not fun. There's an opportunity here to implement some depth to a shallow portion of the game. In addition, this would bolster social interaction and community. Who knows? We might make a friend or two (yay). Also, I hear from the maintenance bots that the trash compactors in the basement are getting full of useless weapon parts and armor pieces, and the catapult that fires the garbage at the Fallen is in need of repairs. So it's time to implement a recycling program, or the leftovers of our weaponry may spill into the City, and if that happens, we may have some savvy civilians piecing together make-shift assault weapons, and then we'll have gangs. Don't let the City form gangs. We've got enough to deal with already. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Edit: I like the idea of incorporating a like-for-like trade value system. So, for instance, if you want a Gjallarhorn, you'll need to offer a similar-tier exotic weapon in exchange. Edit 2: Bottom line for me is I think the game could benefit by presenting us options for the stuff that we don't want. We're out there, chasing this loot, but we're getting a lot of stuff that might not be useful to us. Just dismantling everything is boring. This is an opportunity to fill out that part of the game. Okay, I don't want this. What can I do with it besides trash it?

  • It what Bungie could do is this...since everything is basically rng in the game anyway have a "vendor" so to speak that you go to and like you have a spare plan c you offer that and someone else who has put in another exotic would then in a sense trade it to one another...it could be like the wonder trade in pokemon X and Y and what not if anyone has played them lol...except if you trade an exotic you will get an exotic...like you well always get the same tier of weapon back...but you could leave it there until someone else puts another weapon instead of having to keep going back if no one is eating to trade at that moment

  • While I do believe that general trading would be a problem, there is a compromise: if a fireteam finishes an activity, they could swap the loot that they get with that of another player. To balance this, the players should be of similar level and each player should be able to do it a limited amount of times (once for each activity for example, leaving one player out in a team of 3), not only will this limit the trading of gear, but it will also maintain the current reward system and prevent special items from falling into the hands of those that have not yet earned the right to carry them. As with all things, this can be taken abused, but this will be because of personality and external factors, but these problematic players will still need the other member of the transaction to agree.

  • The only problem I still see with this is that it can still be quite exploited. Let's say someone has 5 Gallys (or any piece of gear that someone else wants really). They can get pretty much any other piece of gear they want without doing much of anything. To counter this, I think that that a mini-bounty could be implemented. For example, let's say two people exchange a Fatebringer and Gally. The person who received the Fatebringer would not be able to use it (kind of like they way exotic bounties work) until they run VoG on hard. In essence, they would have to to do the raid on the difficulty that it can be recieved on (if it were Vision of Confluence, they could run it on normal). The person who received the Gally would have to do a small version of an exotic bounty. Even though they traded, they still have to earn it to use it. Of course that raises a problem for those who aren't able to do raids for whatever reason. However, I'm quite positive that this will be a great motivation for those who haven't raided to do so, especially if it's with a whole fireteam of Guardians who have these "raid bounties". TL;DR: Getting a raid weapon from trading requires a run on the difficulty it can be obtained from for one to be able to use it. A "raid bounty". Good motivation for those who never raided. Getting an exotic would require a small exotic bounty for one to use it .

This seems like a very good idea to implement trading into destiny..... However I fear this might not or cannot work for some time to come. The reason is simple really.... If you pay attention to the way the loot system works in destiny you will find that its not broken at all... Infact there is a theories of the RnG system ( Random Number Generator) being linked to trading. I find that it is the only way a system like that could work. Let's think about it for a second. Picture two players, player A and player B, they both go into a raid to farm for gear to get them to the next level, player A finish the raid and come out with 3 of the same pieces mean while player B dose the same and comes out with shards every time for over a month. Player A is now a few pieces away from the next light level but had no more use for the other duplicates he has while player B has no progress because his roll for that month came out bad. If trading was inplace both could benefit from either getting a piece of geart or currency towards getting gear. Heck without a trading system alot of players couldnt get to 30 simply because a piece they needed refused to drop for them and the only way bungie could have fixed it was to alow pvp events ( iron banner) and vanguard to sell gear that would get players to lvl30. That caused a big unsatisfactory reaction to players that did get gear because it felt all for nothing. In the same sense was the reason for Xur to be placed on weekends to make up for the almost impossible grind for exotics which damn near devalued most item on a whole....now it's almost like most exotics are like Commons because everyone are atleast 3-6 the least. The only way I think bungie can put trading in destiny would be to get rid of Xur......the next step would be to increase the amount of glimmer a player can hold or replace the use for strange coins now that xur would be gone..... And last but not least put a whole arsenal of new items into the game or piece together HoWs gear with that of a few others then sit back and alow for a economy to start developing. Not only would this place value on items but also their rarity would now be re-evaluated .This would give the game a whole new meaning because mind numing grinding will now have purpose and when you wear a piece of item it feels like there is a story behind it or that you work hard to buy it making you has a player feel important rather than another average Joe that has a ice breaker. Now any Guardian could feel like they had a ghorn or a Hawkmoon, I have both thanks to the almighty rngsus and it's a good feeling..."well atleast until Xur get his hands on it".

  • I dont really agree with player to player trading but i would like to be able to trade with raid vendor for instance if i finish a raid and got a exotic and all i really want is a raid weapon i should be able to trade in the exotic to obtain a raid weapon. To keep it from break the game it would have to be in the same category heavy for heavy etc.

  • I have talked about this topic in detail with many of my online friends and friends IRL that also play the game on various levels, pve only pvp only or the mixture such as myself. Through our many discussions we have come to a even but easy way to do this. But as the old saying goes " Easier said than done." Here it goes..... Have BUNGIE setup a trading outpost in the spot they deem fit. With this trading outpost you have the Option of putting your "Item" up for trade. While submitting your item you have to pay a "FEE" to the Outpost person for "doing the work" i.e. strange coins, materials, motes of light or/and glimmer and with this payment you have the option of selecting up to 3 possible trades that you would accept "WITHOUT FAIL" for said "Item" you put up for trade. Example You have a "Suros you want to trade. You put in the tradeing outpost pay 7 strange coins and 4000 glimmer and select 3 other exotics like the Monte Carlo, Last Word, and Truth as the weapons you will accept for this Suros. NOW only 1 exotic or legendary for Equal Trade basically 1 for 1. NOW the person that has any of these 3 items that want the "Suros" can now accept trade through the Trading outpost submit said weapon Pay 7 strange coins and also 4000 glimmer to finish the trade. Any items submitted for trade will be removed from Inventory and placed with the Trading Outpost. It is the Players responsibility to check in with the Trading outpost for the status of there trade. Any Trades not completed by the weekly refresh will have to start anew and all items will have to be withdrawn and resubmitted with the "Fee" paid again. It is the players responsibility to Keep up with the Trading outpost and the status of their item. Also trades should be limited to 1 trade per person per weekly refresh. Take this how you want. BUT if Bungie decided to put in trading i think this will be fair to everyone WITH Bungie in control of the trades through a Trading outpost not Player to Player to reduce "dupes" and limit it to 1 per person per week to reduce Abuse, regardless of the Rarity of the item in question. Through the talks i have had this seems to be the best possible option with some tweeks from Bungie to insure the best possible method the deem fit and how to implement it if they Indeed decide to Offer a Trading system at all. Either way this is a collective discussion with myself and friends and this is what we have reached as a Fair way with out having People Directly Being BOMBED with Trades from random %^@!#@# like game invites, and avoid the "Begging scenario" hopefully it is clear enough to understand. have a great time playing and wish you all luck with your drops..until then laterzzz

    • If they add trading, everyone will have every piece of armour and every gun before the end of the month. People will then stop playing, for the most part. It doesn't make sense for them to do it, both from a business standpoint (they want you to keep playing) and from a moral standpoint (people ripping each other off).

    • Wouldn't stop the eBay brigade, if trading comes in the only real way to keep it fair is only trade with in fire team with in 2 minutes of receiving the item. Trade is made or declined on the fly. One person must trade one newly acquired item of legendary status or above. The other person can offer up anything the deem equal value, option to trade or decline occurs.

        • All these talks of trading is pointless until Destiny 2. Deej and other Devs made it clear there won't be a consideration for trading until their next game. They wanted the feel of "earning" your weapon from a strike, raid, nightfall, etc. to be "memorable" so you can say "yeah I got it from there, I earned it"... "yeeeaaaahhhhh right! Hit the floor!" - Garfield

          • I love this idea! You still had to "work" for whatever it is you are trading for the item that you want. If Bungie didn't want to open it up so that anyone could do this with anyone, perhaps they could somehow limit it to only trading with people in your clan. It would be a great benefit for clans.

          • Trading wouldnt benefit the game since trading would only be about hawkmoon, ghorn, crux and mythoclast... a game only benefits from trading if there is enough content you could trade or would want to trade. Destiny is not that kind of game. The best option would be a roll for the drop option at the loot checkpoints or at the end of certain missions like nightfalls.
