Suggestion: an NPC loot exchange system

Dear Bungie, I ran the Nightfall on all three characters of mine last night and had a blast. I even got two exotic drops! But they were exotics I already had, so really just a couple of exotic shards. This is where I really wish Destiny had a token system like World of Warcraft does for raiding, where I could purchase my loot with a token if I'm lucky enough to get the drop. Deej talked a week or so ago about not wanting to do a player trading system because it takes away from the epic story of how you got your awesome stuff, so I can see how they might not want to do a token system. But I can't imagine Bungie is satisfied with a situation where getting an exotic drop is "meh". So I'd like to suggest that Bungie implement a system that allows players to trade in their Nightfall loot to an NPC for something else. This would have some strict limits in place so as to avoid abuse by players. Let's call it "The Exchange", but maybe it's run by an existing character like Eris Morn or someone else more appropriate (though "special requisitions" certainly seems like it'd be up her alley). The Exchange: Upon completing a Nightfall run, players have a period of 24 hours (which also ends upon weekly reset, should someone attempt to do this at the final moments) to trade in their Nightfall loot at The Exchange for an engram of the same kind. An exotic chestpiece would exchange for an exotic chest engram, a legendary hand cannon would trade for a legendary primary weapon engram, and so on. This engram is like any other, and does not retain the ability to be traded further. This allows players another chance at some loot they want when they are fortunate enough to get some good rewards from Nightfall, but unfortunate enough to already have the same gear. To be clear, because it is an engram players are still taking a risk. They may wind up with something new and awesome, or they may wind up with the same thing or even with just the materials that sometimes drop from engrams. Let the player decide if they want to take that risk. The Exchange would preserve the RNG nature of loot, while helping to eliminate some of the disappointment players experience when RNG gives them the same thing all over again. It turns "Icebreaker again?!" into "Maybe I can still get something good out of this." It also provides players with more choices to make in regards to their Nightfall loot beyond just "keep it or shard it". To reiterate: The Exchange would only be an option for Nightfall-won exotic and legendary gear and weapons, and only within 24 hours of winning it, and only for an engram of the exact same category as the original loot. Thanks for your consideration, and for making a game fun and engaging enough to warrant this kind of feedback. I welcome any further suggestions for refinement or alternatives. If you'd rather not see this kind of system implemented, why not? Edit: Edited (2x) title to better reflect the actual suggestion.

  • Dig it.
Deej talked a week or so ago about not wanting to do a player trading system because it takes away from the epic story of how you got your awesome stuff
Yeah, most of my gear-acquisition stories are "I was on patrol and killed a level 4 dreg in the Cosmodrome" or "I honestly can't remember how I got it because it probably was from an activity I'd done tens of times before." It's a good argument in theory, but it doesn't accurately represent the reality of the game they created.

    • TLDR.... But yeah you should be able to turn in 5 shards for an exotic of your choice or something. That would be rad. Maybe more shards depending on if it's like primary/heavy/armor etc

The biggest mistake you made in making this post is titling it "trading". Should have called it an npc loot exchange. I will always be against adding trading that allows a way for real money trading to sneak into the game. Your idea is player and npc only so I am fine with it. Truthfully I think it would be a fun idea and would not even need the restrictions you are suggesting. Being able to trade an exotic or legendary item for an engram sounds like a great idea to give duplicate loot drops more value. However with Xur in the game as he is now this system is a bit redundant. Xur is there to help mitigate the impact of rng when seeking exotics. This exchange system would so the same and probably do it better. If they made it so Xur had this function where you could trade any exotic or legendary for an engram of the same quality and type I do not see how anyone could really argue against it.

          • No trading. If you can name me one objective in this game that only one specific gun is needed to accomplish I'll change my mind.

              • Bad time to post a suggestion I guess, since everyone's talking about PoE! Maybe people can read this too and not bury it?
