...the T.V and there is a news flash, a reporter explains that there is an asteroid twice the size of North America hurtling towards the planet Earth, they have estimated it will hit within 23 hours and 59 minutes. What would you do? [spoiler]The fiction tag didn't seem to help, even though it is fiction in this scenario the below is true. So just to clarify, the scientists are bloody useless and couldn't detect a fart in a bathtub. They failed to notice the asteroid before it was far too late to do anything. Bruce Willis is a good actor he or any other actor cannot save you. Earth is doomed, firing rockets at something that size wouldn't even cause a dent. If by some freak chance the asteroid split we are all still -blam!-ed, you would just have smaller asteroids hurtling towards Earth like a cluster bomb, all human life and most other life will be wiped out, if not by the initial impact but by the chain reaction that it would cause afterwards such as tidal waves, earth quakes and then the sunlight been blocked by all the dust from the fall out.
