Home vs public schooling.

I started out homeschooled, then slowly transitioned to public. So I got the best (and worst) experiences from both. But I have always wanted to know what public schoolers think of homeschooling and vise versa. Thanks flood.

  • I'd rather homeschool my kids than have them be brainwashed into the pro-feminist, overly patriotic american agenda. I will teach my children only how to quickscope, noscope, and rek scrubs

  • Public schooling is better than being homeschooled, depending on your home environment.

  • Have been in both, home school is my preference as it was many time more challenging (7 full time subjects I was taking for my last years) and give me a better head start (certificate courses) then public school and I much prefer to just work with some music in the back ground then deal with idiots so it suited me better

  • Home schooling is probably undersold too frequently. It's a good environment for a lot of individuals with the potential to think critically and analytically, a skill that even students in top tier classes can lack. Friend of mine was homeschooled until high school, entered for about 2 and a half years until he reached the dropout age, went back to his former studies, nailed his SATs, scored 5's on a couple AP tests and got accepted to MIT. Again, homeschool deserves a little more attention than its given.

  • I think homeschooling is great from a learning perspective so long as you have good instruction. The only thing you miss out on is the social aspect of an actual school. The effect of that is debatable.

    • I think when you are homeschooled the only thing you miss out on is dicking around with your friends instead of paying attention to class.

      • Home schooling. I was too disruptive in public schools, because you couldn't pay me enough money to not talk to my friends always ever. It was great, but I learned less. But online classes, especially, because google.

      • Nice thread. 👍 There are a lot of misconceptions about homeschooling... I was homeschooled and had friends and was social - through meeting kids in my neighborhood at a young age to being a part of different local groups, etc etc. I loved it. I've never been an antisocial type, never been "weary" of meeting new people and going into the world... And as I said, I socialized throughout my entire life, so I learned all of the good, the bad and the ugly... I knew the pain of bullying. So trust me, I didn't miss out on either side of the spectrum. Socialization isn't dependent on schooling... That's really important for people to grasp. My parents also knew what they were doing and actually taught me, though... It's not an easy task, but if it's done the way it should be, then you'll still learn all the lessons you should be learning; including "life" lessons... Homeschooling doesn't translate to "being stuck in your house with no friends"... It meant "you can go play/hang out with your friends after school"... And no, my parents weren't rich... And no, they weren't crazy Christians... They just chose to homeschool. But it's not for everyone... Some may not take as well to it, and like I said, it's not an easy task for the parents... It takes a lot of time, dedication and patience... For kids these days however it's much easier now that you can homeschool online. So to sum this up, I was homeschooled, I wasn't robbed of having friends or socialization or privacy or freedom... I learned, graduated with a great GPA and got into college. And guess what? I immediately loved going to my classes. I never felt "awkward" or "nervous", and I made friends right away. It all depends on your situation.

I'm homeschooled (more of a tutorschoolish thing) and love my classes but have no real friends there (except teachers). Destiny helps to fill that gap tho

            • I had the same experience. I felt more challenged at home but transferred to public school due to social boredom. Though public school is a joke. Literally went to class and drew all day and got good grades without even trying >.>

                • To a large extent it depends how intelligent your parents are. I think that formative education (preschool to Grade 9) should absolutely be done in the public system. Its imperative for kids to learn competitive spirit and how to socialize and how to identify backstabbing pos. After that however, I am more open to the concept of "Alternative Education".. not necessarily all homeschooling. For instance, I (an adult) am very good a Math and am just about to finish my Degree in Economics and Finance, plus I took 2 years of Psychology and have over 5 years of real world work experience (post high school work of course). So there are a number of subjects I am confident I could teach my kids and do a better job at it than the Highschool system does (largely because it would be 1-on-1. But what if my kid wants to become a doctor? I am not an expert in chemistry and my Biology knowledge has long since faded. For those subjects I could however make use of other institutions (i.e. there are lots of businesses that you pay for lessons on specific high school topics; they are used by keeners, by people getting C+ or B- grades that want to be more competitive when they apply to university, and by a small number of people failing these courses). In truth, I would vastly prefer to pay for my kids to do their high school level studies entirely through these sorts of institutions and through assistance from me. Also, a number of universities (including Ivy league schools) are offering first-year courses to high-school students not ready to apply. If I could get my kids into something like that, it would be phenomenal for them. Why is it so good as an option? I think its because it avoids a lot of distractions, it avoids BS subjects kids don't need in my opinion, it gets them into the university approach to studies sooner (on your own, find good resources, manage your time wisely), it involves a much better student-to-teacher ratio (1-on1, 1-on-6 in my proposal) which means the lessons can proceed at the ideal pace for the student (my kid), It opens up a variety of new teaching areas (i.e. superior Economics study, instead of just a tiny bit.. matter of fact when I went to high school I received zero economics, zero finance, zero accounting... which is INSANE... ask me why and I will tell you, it will take a while to type). Other amazing/important teaching areas I could also teach my kids which are not covered in High School include: Psychology, Statistics, Current Events, Recent WORLD History (not domestic only, not ancient) and Sports. Regarding Sports, it depends where you live, but where I live Gym constituted basket ball and Volley ball for 90% of my high school gym classes, and no actual sports; so I would much rather get my kids into weightlifting, powerlifting, marathon training, lacrosse, Rugby, Hockey, Football (AKA Soccer), Wrestling, MMA... whatever they wanted to do. My kids could join a team and if I could afford it, I could put them in with a professional trainer for 1 day per week. Anyways, bottom line: (1) Formative Education should be Public; (2) Final Years of Education are vastly improved through use of the private sector; but, you need to be able to afford such an expensive approach and you might need to have more free time on your hands than you actually do. There it is. Tell the world my story.
