Newbie Here. How are Crucible matches removing level advantages?

So I just tried my hand at the Crucible and, well... It certainly feels like there is a level advantage... For starters, everyone I got placed with was over level 20 and I was only level 5. Dont even have a heavy weapon yet... I shoot at the enemy hitting with multiple rounds, barely take down their shield. They turn around and insta-kill me. How is that possibly balanced/fun? I played CoD and Halo almost religiously and was very good (Seriously, was in the top 100 players for HC FFA in CoD on their leaderboard). I was expecting a learning curve in this game, obviously, what with the mobility of jumping around and all. Not knowing the maps yet, etc. But skill is obviously not the only thing that matters in the Crucible. The only times I ever got a kill were by using my grenade, or managing to headshot with my sniper. I understand that in a game where leveling up and getting betting gear people want to use it, but maybe make special playlists for people that want to use that gear. Otherwise, make something for lower level players where everyone has the same gun options, or loadouts, or something. As it is, I feel like an ant trying to kill elephants by tickling them... And I want to say this before anyone comments about it. Please dont say "Level up and get better gear then do the Crucible". When it says that level advantages are removed, I dont expect to have to level up to do well. It is blatant false advertising. EDIT (SORRY IN ADVANCE FOR THE ALL CAPS, BUT PEOPLE SEEM TO BE MISSING THIS POINT): THE GAME SAYS "LEVEL ADVANTAGES DISABLED. SO WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO LEVEL UP TO STAND A CHANCE?

  • I jumped into crucible with my brand new level 8 Hunter and I dominated. I have a level 40 Titan so I already new how to play. It doesn't matter what level you are just how good you are and how you play.

    • Having played as a lvl 5 new character with the starting weapon as a troll I would easily top the leader board. It isn't hard once you've figured out how to read your radar and don't try getting into fire fights without your team. Doing those two things will help you the most. There is no level advantage only a difference in the abilities you have unlocked and the weapons you are using. A lvl 5 can easily handle it though if you are being smart about it.

    • You are correct mate, everybody is talking rubbish, absolute tosh. There is no level playing field. It's all very well people saying 'what perks have u unlocked' or what weapon are you using? That's just it..... For a level playing field things MUST be identical, end of.

      • I jumped straight into crucible when I started my warlock, Khvostov, preacher, and all, and was consistently in the top 3. Level means nothing in crucible.

      • In PvP, there are advantages given to higher level entities over lower level entities. When facing an enemy 1 level above, you deal 30% less damage; 2 levels above, 40%; 3 above, 50% less. If you're 4 or more levels below an enemy, you cannot deal any damage at all. That's why you see "impossible" when trying to do a mission at too high of a level. Weapon attack values also play a role here. I'm not sure on numbers, but a 272 attack weapon will not deal it's full damage to a level 30 enemy until it is leveled beyond 300 attack. In regular crucible, these sorts of advantages/ disadvantages are removed. You will not deal less damage to a higher level player. Your gun deals damage according to its impact alone. That said, higher level players can have their armor stats higher, and have more perks to give them an edge. Maxed legendary guns also have perks that can make them very deadly. In Iron Banner (special event), level differences do come into play. I'd recommend keeping away from that until you're at least level 28-30. As far as improving, learn the rhythm. Find a gun that you like and practice. Even uncommon guns can have good setups. I keep a few high impact rares just for crucible. If you want to play PvP and enjoy it, keep an eye out for anything like that. Learn other players techniques and either plagiarize them or learn to counter them. And yes, fusion rifles are annoying. You learn to live with it.

      • Find the golden chests on earth. I think the 3rd chest gives you a pulse rifle that's pretty good. When I was deleting toons and releveling (sad I know) I'd use that pulse rifle in pvp at your lvl and be top of the boards more often than not. This was before the pulse rifle buff btw.

In game, when you're a level 3 and you cross a level 20 enemy, you're most likely going to get pwned like no tomorrow. But if you're closer to each others level, say a 29 and a 30, or a 14 and a 16, then you stand more of a chance. They took that concept and put it in the Iron Banner. So with normal crucible, it's like everyone is on the same level. No level advantages.

        • What perks have you unlocked for your character at level 5? THAT is where your disadvantage is.

        • Weapon choice is a big factor....as you get used to the game....at level 5 you can run around with the khavstov the first gun you get and wreck the shit out of people.

        • There is no level advantage, but there are weapons advantages. Unless your sick nasty, you ready kind of at a disadvantage until you get some good gear man. Don't get me wrong, it's doable, and it happens more than you'd think, it's just not as easy as one would think with there being no level advantages. Destiny is a different type of shooter.

        • Level makes no difference. A level 5 with a Shingen E and a level 19 with a Shingen E would do the same damage. Perks, skill trees, and overall gun stats still matter. Obviously leveling up nets you guns with better stats (stability, impact, etc), higher quality gear has more perks, green has none, blue 1, legendary/exotic 3. Maxing out your subclass' skill tree obviously makes a big difference. Armour only matter for the perks. Everyone has a baseline defense, let's say, 100 HP. Hand Cannons obviously do more damage than ARs, but ARs have the higher rate of fire. It's the same within each weapon class. Some ARs have the higher damage (impact), but low RoF, while some are low impact high RoF (Pro-tip: those suck). Level advantages are disabled in the most basic of ways. Everyone has the same base attack/defense. Apart from that, of course being a higher level will give you an advantage. More play time = more opportunities for a gun with quality stats - whether it's green blue or purple. Maxing out the skill tree of course is a huge advantage.

        • Level advantages, literally level. Have you ever played a mmo? Try attacking a a mob 10 levels above you and you can't even hit him. Even with the BEST gear in the game if something is enough levels above you with the WORST gear in the game you still can't touch him. Your assuming "level advantages" means totally equal regardless of progress in the game when it only specifies level. The description doesn't say level, gear, and weapons advantages disabled. Even CoD favors more gameplay. Can't unlock many weapons, perks, and mods to guns without experience earned through playing.

          • Level advantages ARE disabled in crucible. Impact on weapons is the key consideration, use a high impact weapon to cause max damage. In Iron Banner however, it's totally different. Levels matter and so does your weapons and armour stats. It is possible to be competitive in Crucible at lvl5. You just need to be more cautious in your approach as you can't run and gun as easily like COD. Also be aware that your character subclass isn't maxed so the perks to make your char tougher, faster, recover quicker etc isn't the same as higher levels. Like others said, it's an MMO. Level your char, obtain better weapons and armour and then you will rip it up. Try the khostov, it's a pretty handy weapon and a lot of fun to use.

          • Level advantages disabled doesn't discount the abilities or guns( really the perks on the gun) that players can use.

Hey dude, What matters is the weapon stats (not the 331 stat), the impact, recoil, etc... Obviously exotic weapons have a faster TTK than your basic weapons, so it'll be a bit difficult to counter them. In terms of shields, the advantage high level players get is the perks on the piece, be it increased melee attack speed, double grenade, etc... If you shoot at a guy with a low impact auto rifle, he 'll still have time to turn around and put two Thorn bullets to your skull :) Run a shotgun, or a sniper with a hand canon, while you level up, you'll be fine. There's a big difference between Destiny and COD, you'll need some time to get there. Good luck!

          • I am pretty sure someone has already touched on this, but the level advantages are disabled. You can kill a level 32 in the same amount of shots that it takes to kill a level 2. I am not gonna tell you to "git gud" or any of the other ignorant comments im sure you are getting, but I will say you need to play a bit and adjust like you were saying. There are a few things that could have been going on in the games you speak of. Destiny servers have pretty bad lag when it comes to pvp along with a handful of lag switchers. That can cause your hits not to register as they should. But to sum it up.... You can compete with everything you have right now without leveling up. The only disadvantages you have are going to be your skill tree is not leveled up for your subclasses, you don't have a heavy weapon and you don't have the experience playing this game on these maps.

Level Advantage DISABLED means that your weapon's ATTACK rating does NOT matter, only its stats do (i.e.- a 331att Handcannon will do the same damage as a 56att one provided they have the same IMPACT) the reason why you're getting killed is because at level 5 you have not maxed your SUBCLASS. see, as you keep progressing, you'll soon find out that your base stats (Armor, Agility and Recovery) will go up, quite a bit, and here's what seem to be your "problem" - while you can be doing teh same damage as your opponents even with your lvl5 primary, your enemies who are likely lvl20+ have most likely TWICE as much Armor ...so if i am correct the fact you're getting killed easily has nothing to do with Level advantage, but rather with your low base stats it wouldn't make sense to have someone who just started the game (lvl 1-5) to be AS STRONG as someone who's been playing for weeks and months, especially when it takes about 6-8hrs to fully max your chocen Subclass, so the only thing Level Advantage does is it makes you competitive in a sense that you're still able to kill someone who's level 32 even so you're just level 5, but you'll still have tough time doing so, especially in one-on-one gunfight (if you shoot them from a distance with a sniper, although a lvl5 sniper, they'll still die tho)

You just have to find the right stats on weapons Sniper, High RoF, Agile Scope. Fusion Rifle, Fast Charge, High Stability. Shotgun, Range and impact Auto Rifle impact and Stability Scout Rifle, rate of fire and impact Pulse Rifle High ROF or Impact, Stability Hand Cannon, High impact and range. Also research golden chests, 2 of them drop heavy weps I believe. Or go to the gunsmith. Obviously there is a level advantage, in terms of gun quality and ability upgrades.. Would be stupid AF if they disabled ability upgrades. But as far as guns are, there are tons of blues with similar stats to legendaries just not the same perks. But the base stats are what count the most anyways, so quit whining and do some research on guns to use.

          • Lv disable bla bla bla are already explained here Here are a few handy tips for cusible 1 in the middle of a firefight...crouch. ppl are used to aiming for heads and now they miss a few shots. + rumours has it ur acc or stability go's up a bit when you crouch, yet to confirm that 2 when you're in a firefight. Don't jump! It makes you an easy target. You have no idea how many ppl I shot down. (Also from across the map) use slides or w/e 3 don't run in the open and start shooting.(campers everywhere) create an advantage for yourself. Exmp: use a wall to hide behind 4 crouching does not completely remove you from the radar. only for the first few sec. And you have to not move at all. 5 when you see a shiny red dot all across the map.... thats a sniper when they zoom in. ( Don't need to explain anything here xD ) Have fun in the crusible

          • Dude, I totally know how you feel. I tried Crucible as a level 6 and I literally got eliminated. My team lost, I wasn't even close to ranking up, and I didn't get any kills or Crucible points. I think that Crucibles shouldn't be based on rank or attack, but like you said, like COD or Halo.
