How has DeeJ NOT done his "job?"

As far as I know, DeeJ's official position is "community manager" (if this is incorrect, stop reading here). Now, curious as to what this entails, I decided to do a quick Google search for the term "community manager" and was given this definition via Wikkipedia: "An online community manager builds, grows, and manages online communities, often around a brand or cause." My question is this, how has DeeJ failed? I will add my thoughts later, first, let's see what the "community" (#sarire) has to say. First edit: this is not a suck up post, I'm here to defend a member of this community who I've seen on these forums for years. For those of you who have the older accounts yet still persist that I'm doing nothing but looking for attention make me sick. Second edit: I'm seeing a lot of replies saying "the forums could be better" or even "the forums were better." My post was never about him doing better or worse with destiny as opposed to when he was on the forums during the Halo era, only if he is doing his job as of now. I too think he's slacked off, he could be doing more, but consider this: would you be able to do a better job?

  • He has not failed his job at all. When players get dissapointed/angry, they need someone to blame. As far as I can see, DeeJ is the one that is closest to being "the face of Bungie" thus, people have their anger pointed towards him.

  • From someone who works in software and high tech, he is doing an excellent job - one of the best I've seen. Not getting everything you want? You shouldn't be surprised, bungie will prioritize what is "game breaking" not "inconveniences".

    • Here's how, and I'll use an example of a good community group. Currently, Deej does more than a few things wrong. First and foremost, his communication skills are poor. As a community manager, he should be addressing player concerns at least once a day, through use of the forums. Even if it is a simple: "I like this idea. I will bring it up." One example of active devs are the devs of warframe. They reply to forum posts several times a day and always make sure that the community knows what is going on. Deej doesn't do this. Secondly, Deej's actual weekly updates are pretty lackluster. These updates are a chance for him to truly show the community what is going on. Instead he fills them with anecdotes and half-hearted promises of "Someday, a better game". A better weekly update would state "This is where we are in doing X thing, and what else we are working on." It would also address specific community concerns, which he only does in a minimal capacity. The question that most of you are asking after reading this is, "But is that really Deej's fault?" The answer is: Yes. While we have to understand that Deej is restricted from discussing certain things, his absolute lack of communication leaves much to be desired. The fact is, even if he is restricted from discussing any eta on updates or any ideas on future updates, he could still acknowledge good ideas in the community and communicate more than he currently does. This leads to the conclusion that Deej is currently failing.

      • OK.. Holy shit man... Its fine to not want to bash the guy... I get that... But some of you talk about him likes he's actually done anything for you... "Above and beyond"? Give me one example.... I'm honestly asking.. Writing a weekly update that is more of the same " were listening, soon" is not my idea of doing a great job, unless we have insanely low expectation from the position.. What has be fought for? When has he ever responded to anything that wasn't damaging to bungie? Again.. Honestly asking..nothing against the guy, I expect nothing from community managers because I know exactly how their position works.. But it blows my mind how and why so many defend him based on what he's done.. But can't seem to come up with any example

        • Deej is a living legend in the Bungie community, he's only worked for Bungie since 2011, but he's been involved with halo and many other games for like 8 years or something, I couldn't think of a better guy for the job. And when ppl say he doesn't do that job, they are completely bullshitting. His job is to communicate with the developers about what the community thinks, he doesn't fix anything and he doesn't have to reveal anything, all he does is relay information from one party to the other, nothing else.

Because compared to the old community managers back in the halo 3 days he's done a shit job of actually building and interacting with the community, which is his job

            • Because I know people who were on the fence about taking Destiny back to gamestop and Deej's holier than thou attitude was the straw that broke the camels back. I don't think a single person has ever bought this game because of Deej. Hence, he's failing to build a community.

              • He is not in charge of game development. People are stupid and want to blame him for not getting the Gjallerhorn or anything good from nightfall but in no way is he responsible for that.

                  • There are racist posts all over the forums which have not been moderated. Homophobia is tolerated on a daily basis. DeeJ posts once, perhaps twice, a week with an over edited, committee written, post which usually has very little reference to what gamers are talking about. He barely plays the game and frequently posts how he doesn't "have any knowledge of that process" and doesn't ever follow up. The 'Xur has been extended" post, DeeJs own post, is still open to new comments despite how it's being used for misinformation (albeit funny) every Sunday. Let's not even get started on how useless he is to us as a mouthpiece to the developers. In the words of Al Pacino "he's an absentee landlord ". The community is not being managed. Hence the community manager is not doing his job. Some people are new to multilayer online games like this. I'm not. Ive played dozens over the years, been part of more communities like this than I can remember. I don't recall a community manager as bad as DeeJ.

                    • Granted, I haven't been around for long, but he doesn't seem to be a bad guy. He's done a hell of a lot more then other community managers that I've seen in games, and while I guess he could be more active in and around the forums, I don't really blame him for not wanting to go where everybody talking about how bad or good he is. He's obviously involved in the community, it's just personal opinion as to whether or not the ways he's involved are good or bad. Personally, I'd say they're good.

                    • Deej is doing his Job. Its just that people are ignorant, impatient, and looking for blood, and deej is the closest bungie employee they can get their claws on. You wouldn't believe how many people think Deej actually works on the game.

                    • Personally deej is just more or less a face. Has zero power but just something to point to. He dishes out updates that are Prolly revised and edited by someone higher up. In end he's just a face to put in front of the masses in my opinion.

                    • My opinion on DeeJ is that I see no purpose for him. He doesn't help the community grow, he doesn't communicate with anyone at all unless their stupid riddles, and he doesn't address important topics about Destiny's fault and how the community has amazing ideas. He doesn't acknowledge shit. I say fire the bastard and let someone at Bungie just do the ol' weekly updates because as of now we basically don't have a community manager. Anyone can post a update about a game and say "We listen to the community and love all your feedback, we are listening!"

                    • There is no Community. Majority of everything on this forum is from people from off topic. Bungie already knows this and that's why they don't bother anymore with the forums.
