was playin with the band today, and we were working on a song i wrote. i came up with a cool transition that would change the key of the song, and change the sound a lil. since nobody knows anything about theory, we couldn't do it. why doesn't anybody learn it? its so useful and it actually improves your songwriting abilities

ehh?? i'm simply too lazy to really get into theory, but i've written lots of things of various genres and it only gets better and better. i know my fret boards. :P i'm not a lead player, though. bass, rhythm guitar and vocals. i can sit down and write out a melody. one of my favourite things to do is create multi-layered loops and see how far i can take 'em. but i leave the solos for somebody who likes to go crazy on guitar. xD anyway, long story short, you don't necessarily NEED to know theory. plenty of huge musicians never learnt it. but of course, it helps.

I LOVE theory. Well when it comes to math or physics.
Posted by: ADK197285 maybe try to put it in a way they understand, or demonstrate it.
Exactly, just tab it out, that's what I have to do with my guitarist. I play in some odd time sigs that's he's never played before but tabs help him out a lot.

You don't have to anymore to be a successful musician.

I actually find that when learning the theory behind things, it's easier to make transitions between different applications of the theory. The problem is that theory is difficult for some people, but I guess that just separates the men from the boys.

Theory is what makes you a better musician.
i know...it kind of annoys me, because i dont like the fact that the amount of songs we can make is limited cause nobody bothers learning this simple stuff
