The most demoralizing quest ever created.
I took a break from D2 from mid October to last month(on and off). Now that Borrowed Dyad has the full catalyst available I want to stress out just how annoying this catalyst grind is and if you are going for it please have patience. I’m only going to point a few things that YouTube videos don’t mention.
1. Datto and SneakyBeaver do not clarify that certain quests need to be completed in order to progress the catalyst grind. All they say is go here do this go there do this and that’s it.
2. Level up both paths. Loading in and getting Metasized Essentia and rebooting the Nether is brain rotting to the max and it gets boring easily. I did 1 full Nether and collected all 2 materials per area per run and every hour I would hit 1 level. So 2-3 Nethers give you one level. Put on some music in the background. A decent louadout and to be honest it goes by quick. Equip a sniper to swap into when you spawn and reach a new area and equip the ghost mod wombo detector to collect the material before clearing out the area. Repeat the cycle each run. Collect material first, clear all areas, kill boss, move to next area and repeat the process.
3. The Nether is the probably the worst place for players right now due to it being RNG based(heavy on it for most part). Do all and I mean ALL SECRETS ON ALL AREAS OF NETHER. This way you can get all of the coalescence that you need for the Hall Breach portal for Target Lock Catalyst.
4. Make you sure you are on the right paths to collect the taken parts, and the 2 different worms.
I know I’m like 3 weeks late almost by the time this post is up but man………Bungo please I know we want the exotics to feel well earned but holy moly this really tested my patience and took most of my weekend time to do it. Anyways sorry for a lot of wording but I felt very overwhelmed by the non existent clarifications that YouTube videos barely have.

6 RepliesBro… don’t ever follow guides. Just play the game like a regular person. Run seasonal activities, try the new guns, look for secrets (it’s in the description of the nether), read quests, etc etc It makes the game infinitely more fun. Trying to speedrun seasonal content or quests like that just sucks any joy out of the process. Destiny 2 players do that a lot.

1 ReplyAn old friend I recently reconnected with thru the game offered to help me thru this quest & I jus don't care for all the hoop jumping. He swears by the SMG but I jus cannot bear anymore of Lord Bungo's ascenin quest design. The last few months I have dropped off Destiny playtime, and these clunky quests aren't helping. I'm not sure I'm even gonna bother with Frontiers, cos they'll jus double down on the convoluted mess that is quest design.

5 RepliesI’m thinking OG Thorn. Or those sword quest in D1. Getting Lunas and all those OP crucible weapons was honestly BS too. Completely unfair. But this does suck. You have no idea what to do or what you’re missing. Horrible quest design.

2 RepliesAnd the most important part . The gun is weak and all over the place ,it's only ok when you shoot panic . What a terrible grind for such a mid smg . osteo striga far and away was better before they nerf it into the ground. I'm all for revering the nerf to osteo and nacrautic grips . I'll trade in barrow in a heart beat for what we used to have. just a lame move on bungie.

Just infuriating how they dropped the ball on this. Going back and forth, switching "paths"....all one big time sink to keep us logged in. Whoever created that catalyst quest should never be allowed to again. Just one big mess.

I've been holding off on the season till everything comes out, barely putting any effort into it. This season burns you out so fast. ~having to load into the activity multiple times just to get the right zone you want...... AND having to do it all over again because of swapping from Ambition to Resolve to collect the other worms.........[b]why[/b]..... Just horrible. And while the nether is okay....it not having the dedicated Patrol Space that Season of the Haunted did.... makes collecting the worms that much more annoying. (Bungie doing something right in the past....And completely not doing it again in the future) The gun is worth it (Hits really hard for a primary + generates super really fast), but you can tell they pulled out all the stops to make sure that you do the most unnecessary & repetitive tasks this season.

I mean this is as a friend… stop chasing mid loot. OFA is the only Dyad cat that matters and even then… it doesn’t. Dyad will be in the vault by Edge of Fate. Bungie always baits your time but when you don’t get caught up in the hype of a mid gun you can mitigate it

3 RepliesThe problem with Destiny content creators like Datto is they're scrambling over each other to be the first to put out 15 minute videos on every scrap of content they can get with the same click-bait titles. A lot of the secrets necessary to unlock catalyst steps have been available from the start before even Barrow-Dyad was able to be acquired. They didn't know those secrets were necessary and they probably don't give enough of a -blam!- to update their "guides", not when they've gotta beat the other suckers to the next 15 minute "lore" video talking about guesses and speculation over a three second dialogue clip or a five word reference in a lorebook.

2 RepliesI agree this quest was mostly tedious but not the worst for me, the Slayers Fang one was shorter but I really disliked that quest for sure solo. While I did this one 90% solo… In the end I really wonder if this whole quest time was worth the gun…

Another thing that's obnoxious is that there's no way to track what you've collected. Just the amount. It forces you to do everything in one sitting, or have some way to memorize everything you've collected. It's the Blue Coins from Super Mario Sunshine all over again.

I got part way into the catalysts and just gave up. It's vague, convoluted, and needlessly grindy. Dungeon exotic catalysts are a breeze compared to this pos.
