If I had bashed my parents in a public venue, they would have beat my ass. Now, that's illegal.

It's not illegal to punish a kid with a belt.

Where we live, it's considered child abuse to even hit them with your hand, unless you are spanking their bottom, and even that is abuse if you leave even so much as a red mark. I wish it wasn't. My mother beat me with a belt a couple of times. Straightened me right up.
