Let's get it started. Part 11: The Glass Lands Matthew’s hand just caught a floating bit of the bronze-like metal floating around the lift. He looked below him to find yards of feet below him, as well as dozens of Vex, still firing at the group, some of them tearing apart the bodies of some of the dregs who were not so lucky. A Minotaur turned his attention to Matthew, who was just hanging on by a single hand. It shot its torch hammer, and Matthew watched as it soared towards him. It a few inches to his right, but it was still enough to singe his hand into making him let go. Saliks caught Matthew’s hand as soon as he fell. Saliks seemed to be balancing on the thin metal that separated the left from the outside. He used one of his other hands to grab onto Matthew’s arm, and throw the human boy behind him, and into the lift, where he soon followed. As both Matthew and Saliks ascended to their destination, they could both hear the screams of rage from the Vex below them. The ascent only took a few minutes, but to Matthew it seemed like hours. The image of the unfortunate four or so Dregs being torn limb from limb kept flashing through his mind, the Ether spewing into the air. Matthew was snapped out of thought when Saliks reached up and shook his ankle, and pointed up. His words were lost to the amount of space travelling around them. Matthew looked up. He was soon greeted by the sight of a curved piece of metal nearly smashing his face in and launching him forward. He propped himself back up with his hands and saw the landscape around them. The floor was made of the same stone as the Citadel but something seemed… different. Rays seemed to flow through the rock, enlightening the stone. As he stood up he found the Dregs around him gawking at the sight, nearly unable to process everything. Matthew began walking forward, beckoning to the group to follow. Saliks followed by his side. They walked for nearly a mile found the stone gave way to what seemed like an endless abyss, fog covering what might be below. A Dreg that was still gawking at the area around them and fell of the edge. With lightning fast reflexes Matthew caught the Dreg’s ankle and pulled him back up. The dreg thanked him, while some of the other Dregs seemed to snicker at their comrade’s mistake. Matthew and Saliks looked around for a way to get across the gap that spanned between them and another stone formation that seemed to be nearly a mile away. Two large plates a few yards away from the group caught both Matthew’s and Saliks’ eyes. They nodded to each other. Matthew told two of the Dregs to step on the plates, and they complied. When the two stepped on them what seemed like a barrier of intangible light surrounded them, reaching only about to their knees. As soon as this barrier was complete, two beams of light shined across the gap between them, and soon stones seemed to form between the two rays, until a bridge was formed. The two Dregs on the plates started to step off of them, then three balls of electricity started to shine a few yards behind the group, and a storm gathered around these orbs. Matthew squinted at these orbs, despite the light shining off of them, then suddenly a flash of light emitted from the one furthest from them. Vex suddenly appeared from what used to be thin air, and the first thing Matthew did was shout in the Fallen Language one of the most useful things Saliks could have taught him. “RUN!” The group began sprinting across the bridge while Vex fired behind them. As the last two orbs of electricity flashed and more Vex appeared, Matthew looked over his shoulders. Two Minotaurs had appeared, but these ones were different than the others chasing them. Instead of chasing the group, they ran towards the plates, and once they stepped on them, the previous white barrier had disappeared, and a new one began to form. The new color of the barrier was a red, and Matthew looked back forward, thinking it wouldn’t be a problem. He was wrong. The bridge began turning back into light, the stone crumbling away, and they were only 3/4s of the way there. Matthew quickened his pace. The group struggled to keep up with Matthew and Saliks, while the bridge became thinner and thinner with each second. The barrier that the Praetorians had taken over had fully been built, and the bridge was practically gone at that point. “Just a few more yards, just a few more yards.” Matthew kept telling himself as they neared the end. Then, as if out of the blue, he felt something grab his waist and lift him up. Saliks threw him with all of his might, getting Matthew just to the other side. Right before the bridge left their feet, Matthew’s Fallen comrades jumped, in an attempt to get to the other side. Most of them made it, however Matthew watched as three Dregs who didn’t jump in time fall into the abyss, along with the Vex chasing that were the group across the now nonexistent bridge. Matthew’s eyes widened as he watched them fall, arms and legs flailing, trying to find a hand or foot hold. His gaze drifted back to the team of Dregs around him and Saliks, panting, trying to catch their breaths. At this point Matthew was horrified at the realization of something. “This is a suicide mission.”
