(Here is a link to an idea of how they got to the lift: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MoyBRcG1kY. I do not endorse the exploitation of Destiny's bugs, as this is only just a way to support the story, not to encourage these acts) Part 10: The Citadel Matthew woke to the sound of the engines of the Ketch making a loud rumbling noise. He shook Saliks awake. The Fallen’s eyes opened and grabbed Matthew’s wrist. Matthew suppressed a shout and backed off. Saliks rubbed his four eyes. “Apologies.” Saliks said, already fully awake. “It’s alright. What’s that rumbling noise?” Saliks listened into the noise. Then his eyes widened. “They’re initiating jump.” Saliks looked at Matthew, “Hold onto something.” Matthew and Saliks held onto rungs on the wall just as the engines accelerated. Saliks held steadfast to the wall, but Matthew was losing his grip. Then his hands slipped. Just as he slipped off the rungs, the ship entered its jump, its speed seeming to slow as it traveled through space. Matthew fell flat to the floor, parallel to the ground. Saliks withheld a snicker at his human friend. “Hold on better next time.” Saliks said, pulling Matthew back up. He brushed himself off, “I meant to do that.” Matthew had studied linear jump technology, but never experienced it for himself. Saliks pressed a button on the wall of the room, and the entire wall turned into a simulation of what’s outside. Matthew saw the space travelling beneath them, while the Ketch seemed to be staying in place. Within minutes the Ketch was in orbit above Venus. “I wonder why they initiated jump this early.” Saliks wondered aloud. Just then a Fallen voice came over the comm. Matthew recognized his new name, Matis, and Saliks’ name being called to the hangar, along with numbers being listed out. Saliks opened the door to the room and started climbing down, Matthew following in suit. Once they reached the hangar, three Skiffs were waiting for them, along with around 20 other Fallen, except they were all Dregs, all except for Matthew and Saliks. A Captain began telling something to the group, his voice chilling Matthew to the bone. No wonder they were called the House of Winter. Their cold eyes and voices seemed to be a byproduct of their every action. Two words especially chilled Matthew. The Citadel. The crowd of Fallen moving towards the Skiffs forced Matthew to the Skiff, Saliks by his side. He was handed a shock rifle and a small Fallen device was latched to his hand, then he was pushed inside the hatch. Matthew looked through the glass of the hatch and saw the Skiff along with the two others lift off the ground of the hangar and start flying forward. The flight was no longer than the time it took for the Ketch to jump from Earth’s orbit to Venus’, but time seemed to slow as they neared a large tower-like structure, made out of something similar tostone, and pieces of it seemed to be floating and spinning around the tower of stone. Matthew could see strange robots patrolling the base of the tower. He recalled the stories of the Vex, though he never saw one before. He thought they would see the three Skiffs flying around the air before he remembered they were in stealth. The Skiffs stopped inside a large valley just outside the area the Citadel was in, their booming arrival of coming out of stealth only greeted by the sway of a single Spirit Bloom. The hatches opened and all of the Fallen jumped off, along with Matthew, this time landing on his feet. As the Fallen met the ground, they started to disappear. Saliks as well. Panic began growing in Matthew’s chest, until an invisible hand touched his shoulder. Matthew turned around to see nothing there. He squinted, and was soon able to see Saliks’ wavery form. “Flick your wrist with the stealth drive on it.” Saliks whispered. Matthew assumed the device on his hand was the stealth drive, and flicked his wrist. His body soon became just a wavery form of what it once was. He felt a tap to the side of his helmet, and his vision switched to what looked like a thermal HUD, able to see the stealthed Fallen. Matthew nodded, and the group began moving forward. They walked past all the Vex, Matthew almost afraid the two bigger Vex patrolling the entrance to the giant structure could see the large group of Fallen and clutched his arc rifle. He looked to one of the Dregs to see it just about to shoot at what Matthew remembered to be called a Minotaur, but Matthew lowered its gun and gestured towards the entrance. The Dreg nodded in thanks and returned to the group. They snuck past the Vex inside, Matthew and Saliks leading the group of skittish Dregs. Matthew gestured for the group to stay behind the entrance to the main room while he went to the lift. It seemed to be blocked off by a wall of floating bronze-like metal. Saliks walked to him, weaving between all the Vex as to not get noticed. “What’s the problem?” He whispered, “We can’t get in.” Matthew replied. The two of them scanned the room. Then Matthew recognized a way in. He pointed to the Vex machinery on the walls of the room. “Can we climb those?” Matthew asked and pointed to it. Saliks nodded. They returned to the group. Saliks told the group of Dregs the plan. They would climb from machine plate to machine plate, until the lift was no longer blocked off. The band of misfits nodded as they continued their suicide mission. The climb was treacherous, Dregs nearly falling from slipping or losing balance, just to have Matthew pull them back up. Once they were within distance Matthew could hear something sizzle. He looked down at himself to find the stealth had been somehow disabled, and the Vexs’ heads slowly turned to face their intruders. The living machines fired at the group as they made a leap of faith, jumping to the lift.
