I think those emblems were a visual flare for people who used the old website. Maybe in the future Bungie will show some love to people who use the new site. I'd expect to see more emblems for people who played Destiny when the sequel comes out.

They are! People who have Heroes, Legends, or Mythics, were members of the old site that stood out and/or were outstanding behaved members of the site. I used the old site in the days of Halo 3/ODST/Reach. But I was a lowly plain Noble Member. Nothing more unfortunately. And I hope so too. I am gonna be honest, I like to be rewarded for being "loyal".
