My friend cant play anything that "requires xbox live gold"

My friend cannot play anything co-op or play crucible despite the fact that he can still chat and open the game meaning he obviously has gold. Troubleshooting tips?

Chatting and playing the game doesn't mean you have Xbl Gold. Destiny can be played without Gold. You can do all activities except Strikes, Crucible, and Raids
