I respectfully disagree. I played a lot of WOW and it was just accepted that any new raid's gear simply trumps the raid that came before it. Look I understand that a lot people are going to be attached to their old gear, but that is precisely what it is. OLD GEAR. The gear that you got from VOG will give you an advantage in the new raid but eventually everyone will have to accept it. Out with the old and in with the new.

  • Did wow incorporate changes during a patch that made store bought gear as good as the existing raids gear? Because that's what is happening... That's my beef. And the old raid has only been out for 3 months. That's a short time to make your only other raid obsolete... The VoG will literally only serve one purpose: ascendant materials to level store-bought legendaries. Hell, even the raid weapons will have less attack power than the vendor guns, so the hated VoG ascendant material runs will actually be the desired end state! That's bananas. Damn, I got another Found Verdict. *breaks for energy* Damn, I got another set of Vault boots. *breaks for shards* This VoG is terrible. All I ever get is crummy raid gear and low powered weapons.
i know I'm exaggerating. Greatly. Just trying to emphasize a point.
One glaring problem with the WoW comparison is the amount of time between updates. Did WoW make such massive changes to their available loot/level cap in such short bursts? I'd think after a year I'd be really burned out on running the EXACT same load out, so I'm not saying I want that either, but damn 3 months and I'm still enjoying the gear I have. No crystal ball here. Just feels too soon. Long story short, I know DeeJ said that the existing stuff will still be good, but the attack power drop means I'll HAVE to switch sooner, rather than later.

LOL, yes Blizzard made MASSIVE changes to gear, skills, raids, pretty much every month sometimes a couple times a month after a patch hits. Every time a patch hit the game literally THOUSANDS of people would complain about how THIS class is OP or THIS change to my gear got nerfed. I am THANKFUL that they are raising the level cap after only a few months. In Blizzard you would have to wait 2 years between DLC. Do you think you could wait 2 years for the next DLC? And you are right people do get burned out running the exact same load out. But you know what burned me out? Having Blizzard make loot drops so insanely shitty that people actually fought each over them like rabid dogs. Imagine this: You just beat the Atheon in VOG and everyone is relieved and happy! But instead of everyone getting a piece of gear or a weapon or even ascendant materials. There is 1 item drop. That's it.... 1 item drop and now you have to beg, plead, barter, threaten the raid leader for the right to have it and the why the other 5 people in the raid group don't deserve it or don't need it as much as you do. Ok now picture it in WOW and then imagine it is a 40 man raid.... Yeah I got REALLY tired of running the SAME gear for MONTHS at a time, but that is how Blizzard was able to get away with 2 years between DLC. And vendors? Vendor NEVER sold anything CLOSE to raid level gear, crafting got close but even crafted stuff was not on par. And when the DLC did finally drop in WOW then ALL of the raid gear that you earned for the last 2 years became complete garbage and useless with ZERO chance of upgrading and keeping it. So... spending time to re-upgrading my exotics in destiny is not that great a hardship in my opinion.

Well spoken. I don't have a real counter. When you say your last set of gear was garbage, technically it wasn't though. It was the best thing short of the newest gear. Grind grind grind to get it. In this case, your raid gear just dropped to being below or on par with crafted gear (destiny vanguard/crucible gear for lack of a better metaphor). Your previous standing with your fellow players is tanked. Less equipped players get a free leg up and veterans and stepped on to accommodate the update. I don't have a wealth of MMO experience to speak from here. I played a few different titles over many years, but none for longer than a year or 2. I appreciate the info, I just can't wrap my head around this mentality yet. Edit: and thank god the loot drops aren't like wow were the raid leader is the only one to get the loot. Jesus.

No what happens is that a single boss would drop 2 pieces of gear out of a possible 10 items specific to THAT boss so another boss in the same raid dungeon would have a completly different set of gear that he would drop. So for example IF we used Destiny as an example. The Templar would only a very specific armor and weapons that would only be useful to certain classes and then only 2 of them for like a 10 man raid. Then it the raid leader's job to divy up the loot to the people in the raid group who needs/wants it. Try dealing with that headache. In WOW raid gear was the best gear, but the way in worked is that there were multiple tiers of different gear. In WOW the only way you could do the Heroic level or "Hard mode" raid (which like Destiny is the same raid but more difficult) you needed to be maxed out with normal raid gear before you could ever even ATTEMPT hard mode. Raid leaders have been known to kick people from raids / clans / guilds for being underpowered or not doing enough DPS or not healing everyone in the party properly. When I say your last set of raid gear turns to garbage with a new DLC in WOW it means that with the level cap increase your gear becomes so underpowered that you wind up dismantling all of it or have it just collect dust. i.e. A level 70 legendary sword would be shitty compared to a level 80 uncommon sword. We are talking about a level 70 sword that you may have spent weeks maybe months raiding and waiting for the right drop to happen. Then the thing becomes worthless with a DLC drop. SIGH.... as you can read I still have WOW PTSD.... LOL

  • Man that's cool though. I like talking to guys that have that kinda experience. Thanks for keeping the convo going. I'll have to concede. If Destiny really fits the bill as an MMO then I guess the comparisons are suitable. There's still some holes here because your level and gear are tied together... But I can still make the connection. Something better than nothing... Thanks again.
