They allow you to earn Blue Engrams faster.
Same with any other Legendary Bond or Class item.

Any evidence of this, I have a selection of legendary warlock bonds and I see no difference

Yeah. I am getting Blue Engrams every 125 kills. Without it I get one every 200 approx. Depending on the type of enemy. Just equip a normal bond and it will take longer to get the random Blue.
