I typically enjoy the debates about which gun or types of guns are the best, what needs to be nerfed and what needs to be buffed. That got me thinking though what is the worst class of guns in the game?
I think it is pulse rifles and it isn't even close. A pulse rifle is master of no engagement, close, medium or long. Normally Jack of All Trade type guns get a lot of nice soft stats. However pulse rifles fail in this category because their clip size is usually too small especially when combined with a lower reserve ammo count.
I have notice that if a pulse rifle hits all it shots to a critical area in theory it should out perform a scout. However the magazine size makes it so the pulse rifle gets between 5 and 7 shots before a reload. The second issue is a pulse rifle has relatively more trouble hitting critical shots with all 3 shots. I believe it actually has a lower average damage due to this.
The biggest problem I see with Pulse Rifles is any sort of hard content. IMO a Pulse Rifle goes through your reserve ammo faster than almost any other weapon type. Harder content this is a big problem because you often need to LOS mobs or bosses which can make it very hard to go pick up ammo. In theory you could use an ammo pack but every other primary weapon type allows you to use a Heavy or Special Weapon ammo pack versus a pulse rifle forcing you to use a primary.
My final Point about Pulse Rifles....Bad Juju......enough said....

Def agree, pulse rifles are doo doo

The raid pulse rifle praedyth time piece is probably one of the best pvp guns but its rare. Because it drops in hard mode gatekeeper and you cant cheese that. I have it and it rocks

Sure, I'll throw in my two cents. First things first: every weapon class (excluding hand canons) can be divided up into two major categories: high impact/slow RoF and high RoF/low impact. If I were to rank them it would go something like: Low impact pulse rifles-> low impact auto rifles-> high impact auto rifles-> high impact scout rifles-> high impact pulse rifles-> hand canons-> low impact scout rifles. The bottom two are there simply because they are unreliable and more often than not have ammo problems. Yes there are some pretty good versions of them, but in general I believe the other classes are more useful. High impact auto rifles, on the other hand are very reliable, and would rank much higher if it wasn't for one factor: they have weaknesses. Post patch most auto rifles have problems keeping accurate at medium-long range, and their damage falls off around that range too, which leaves room for other weapon classes to pass them up. High impact scout rifles would be GREAT guns, but there's one simple flaw with them. Most weaker enemies take 2 head shots to kill. Now this isn't particularly a problem, until you compare it to the higher tier weapons, which can all kill the same enemies in less time. High impact pulse rifles are (contrary to popular belief) actually very reliable and powerful. Most weaker enemies go down in 1 burst if you can manage to get head shots. The low ammo capacity is still noticeable if you're used to other gun types, but it shouldn't cause many problems. Let's be honest here. Hand canons are kinda OP. One headshot kills all but the strongest enemies, and with up to a 12 round mag you shouldn't have much of a problem clearing a room before you have to reload. They do have drawbacks however: slow reload time and abysmal maximum ammo capacity might cause you to have to switch weapons every once in a while; and to top it all off not many hand canons have long range capabilities. Now if hand canons are OP, why are low impact scout rifles above them? Put simply, they're MORE OP! (I'm looking at you VoC). Low impact scout rifles boast the same amount of shots per kill as their higher impact counterparts but with higher RoF, less recoil, higher magazine capacity, and faster reload times. In general, you should never have ammo problems, range problems, damage problems, or accuracy problems; because most of these guns have NO WEAKNESSES. Anyway, this is all just my opinion and if you couldn't tell, it's catered toward PvE activities.

Pulse rifles are stuck in between a rock and a hard place right now. They are decent killers, but most pulse rifles I've seen thus far lack the impact or the stability that all the other guns can offer. They are meant for close to mid range combat but hand cannons just beat them in theory. Whats worse is if we buff the fire rate, they might as well be an auto rifle If the impact is buffed then hand cannons are now out. If the stability or range is buffed then scout rifles are a joke. Red Death and the raid pulse rifle are the only guns note worthy of a good pulse rifle. If pulse rifles receive a buff then those two guns will dominate pvp and pve. Which will lead to crying and nerfs. Finally Bad Juju is a surprisingly good pve pulse rifle. She's super useful for solo pve. Can't wait for her buff.

Pulse Rifles

Pulse rifles are the obvious choice. Praedyths timepiece does work though. It looks like they're trying to fix that with the new dlc
-
1 ReplyPulse rifle for sure. They need a serious impact buff for PVE.

3 RepliesRed death is pretty tough

Unfortunately pulse rifles in all aspects of the game. Possible improvements: Tighter spread on burst Better range, but stay below scout Better impact *** more ammo in clip *** 3 bullets per shot in a 30 round clip is only 10 shots = totally outclassed by handcannons in every way except reload. 36 minimum, about 60 max sounds right Allow selectable burst - every pulse rifle should have choice of 1, 3, 5 round burst, better if we can switch without going to upgrade tree too. They're supposed to be versatile! Generally increase stability/decrease recoil Better ability to cause flinch Also, shotguns in pve are nonexistent. But not sure how to improve here without making PvP even more unbalanced than it already is with shotguns. Am I the only one that thinks one shot kills, even to the face, on a full health guardian should not be standard for shotguns in crucible?

2 RepliesIn pve you couldn't pay me to use an auto rifle.

Hand cannons need a buff man.

Edited by lIIEmIIl: 11/24/2014 5:59:29 PMI do believe that is completely a matter of opinion. Every character I have is outfitted with a Pulse Rifle. Now there are different types of Pulse Rifles such as the Fair and Square and the Super Pox VLO which are pretty close in stats. Those I'm guessing are higher caliber weapons and have less ammo in a clip but the impact is nice... on stats. It still takes roughly 3 bursts to full on kill a person with full health. Plus the mag size will get you murdered. The Super Pox VLO is a nice one since it has field scout which will increase your mag size from 24 to 30; however, this weapon still fires a bit slower and requires 2-3 direct hits to the head to kill in PvP allowing Suros Regimes to out shoot this weapon and every hand cannon in any class or form. Now moving on to the Pulse Rifles that have quickly become my favorites. Bad Seed Down and Strange Suspect. I gave Bad Seed down to my hunter and Strange Suspect to my Titan. This thing has less than half the impact of the heavier pulse rifles, but it doesn't feel like it since it takes (with great aim) 2-3 bursts to kill in PvP. So I'm thinking the impact stats are a little neglected on these machines. The Bad Seed has Excellent Distance, I can rock out snipers with this thing and it has a nice bug out factor since it fires pretty damn fast. 30 Rounds in a mag as well. This is a pulse rifle to use if you want AR like bug out factor and you want Scout Rifle Type precision, not to mention it can and will out shoot Suros Regime in the right hands. The Strange Suspect, if you find the right one has Range Bonuses and Extended mag up to 39, giving you 13 burst fires. It fires quick and it is just as Deadly as the Bad Seed. If you're looking to give the pulse rifle class some love then try out the Bad Seed Down or the Strange Suspect. Definitely worth using. I think that the heavier ones need re tweaked because the impacts seem to be no different from the faster firing ones with less impact. Pulse Rifles are definitely not the weakest in class as I go most of the time in the crucible high 20-30 kills with at least half ending up a headshot using my pulse rifle. (With the occasional crappy matches) Try them out maxed and then see what you think. I love them, but I have been firing Bungies BR since halo 2. On another note, Gunslinger Hunters are funny to use with a Pulse Rifle. Hit a guy with a throwing knife and fire one burst at him. Toast. LoL funny as hell. Titan Lightning Grenades cause them to come running out with half health, Pulse Rifle Bursts on everyone for a nice triple down. They are pretty nice weapons. I would just like to see a better variety of them and to see the Super Pox and Fair and Square act like a heavy hitter.

2 RepliesPulse rifles hands down the only good pulse rifle is Red Death

lol ya hands down pulse rifles.

Pulse rifles for sure

Pulse riffles fo sho.

I use them.. and Pulse Rifles. Although I do love my Fair and Square I got from an engram. Extra precision damage, Fast Reload and 3rd Eye

2 RepliesPulse sadly I wish they would beef up the stagger or the DPS on em. Being a Battle Rifle/DMR fan from halo and all lol

Id probably have to say pulse rifles too, but to fight it, the red death is pretty powerful. I love using that gun in pvp, if used correctly you'll win just about every gunfight. When I first started playing this gun, the strangers rifle was my go to but was always depressed about the impact on it. Haven't really used any other pulse rifles other than those two.
-
3 RepliesI have only really used Red Death, only one worth using, and it does a Good job against every enemy in PVE.
-
2 RepliesI use praedyths timepiece it is a lot of fun in both PvE and PvP. I find it most effective at medium range and don't struggle to kill either scout rifle or auto-rifle users at that range. At close and long range I have other toys to switch to.
-
Pulse rifles are inferior to all other weapon classes.
-
Pulse Rifles were my first to get to Rank III (10,000+ kills). I have used Legendary varieties, and Red Death, and some Bad Juju. The best of them is the Praedyth's Timepiece which I finally got yesterday. I think they are more than fine in most PvE situations, but require more skill to use against Auto-Rifle users in PvP to be successful. Just like Hand Cannon's in PvP, if there is lag, than Pulse will be much harder to use successfully.
-
I want to like pulse rifles, but ugh. Best one I've used so far is the vanguard one, and even then I stashed it after leveling up.

It is and I'm working on an auto riffle to replace my strange suspect pulse riffle. I love the weapon itself but do not like how little damage it does. A nice 15-20% increase in base damage would be perfect and them
