Why Isn't Max Level Merit Based?

Why wouldn't progressing your character be based on your accomplishments instead of some handout from a random number generator? People are spending hours each week for 5,6, and 7 weeks, stuck and unable to level due to RNG not giving the amor piece they need. Bungie clearly wants to keep the players busy with RNG rather than with quality gaming. Getting to 30 should be a sense of accomplishment, not that you were the guy who tripped and fell face first onto a $100 bill. If you want to make things like Shaders or unique weapons RNG, fine, but not leveling your character. The raid already has precious little to offer for your effort - ONE shader, a load screen, some armor, and few weapons. But most often people get their 172nd ascendant energy instead. Why even fix Atheon? The very fact that players were cheesing him tells you that people aren't in there because they are having fun, they just want their loot. The raid itself would have to be overhauled, not putting a bandaid on Atheon when all the cheese did was help players waste less time overcoming a crappy loot system. The bosses all have the exact same mechanics, and it is pretty uninteresting. You might as well just have a slot machine in the Tower players can pull the lever on and get whatever dropped in the mail once a week.

Yes but many ppl are 30 and they need to realize that is their duty to carry their brothers/sisters thru the raid until they too are blessed by RNG. Share you blessing and others will join you in the promised land.

    • agree'd this annoyed e as well its why i couldnt give a shit about getting lvl30 at the end of the day max level should be merit based while the raid armour and such (rare hard to get gear) should just look awesome

    • I agree with this. Leveling shouldn't be subject to the lotto. Just award a guaranteed piece of the missing armor for each completion. Leave weapons, etc. as part of RNG. I got lucky my last raid attempt and got boots after the first boss. I am not looking forward to possibly having to complete dozens of raids to complete the set.

      • Lvling up to 29 is merit based. Lvling to 30 is luck/persitance.

Can you imagine in WoW if raid bosses dropped enchanting materials 90% of the time and dropped NO loot for anyone in the raid? And if the loot that DID drop was utterly useless to anyone in the raid? How long would those raids last? "Hey guys, our guild got world first Garrosh Hellscream on heroic difficulty, cutting edge content! And for it we got....some enchanting materials....that ironically we can't use for anything...because we didn't get any gear to use it on." That is the equivalent here, especially since there is zero social interaction outside of Gamefaqs forums, no "guilds" so to speak of any widespread relevance. At least in WoW when you don't get loot, someone in your guild does that can benefit. There are also many more bosses, usually multiple raids, and 16 slots of armor to upgrade for potential loot. Destiny has ONE raid with 4 loot points, all of which share the same loot table (almost entirely), with only a couple potential armor upgrade slots, and no real community, so it exacerbates the stupidity of RNG based loot systems that are tolerable in games like WoW. It simply doesn't work with Destiny's setup. Furthermore, why would you have materials as part of the loot table when even if people get gear, it is more often than not something they can't even use and just disassemble it for those same materials anyway. Just drop 100% loot, no materials. Pretty much common sense. You can get materials from numerous sources, you can only get to level 30 from raid pieces. It is a terrible gimmick to avoid having to create better content to keep people in game.

          • Welcome to the MMO methodology. Thats what it's about... grind and time invested... some get lucky, some not so much (I have never received a single raid piece to date, heh)

          • Because in a Merit Based system most people can easily get to Endgame, in a RNG based system you can be as good as you like, you have to wait for a RNG to tell you you're at max level, so you'll play the game longer

            • If that was the case then most players would be lvl 5.

              • I couldn't have stated it better. RNG should take some things into account such as good performance and not duplicating loot to no end.

              • I don't think they intended it to be easy for someone / anyone to get ALL raid gear. If it was as hard to do as they seem to have meant any single piece would have been a big achievement getting all would have been HUGE. Just my opinion

                • It's sad when the instant gratification generation learns that life's not fair. Get to level 29 and then play until you get lucky. Afterwards keep playing so your friends get lucky. But it should be fun, if not move on. Some things take time, patience, effort, and even luck.

Level 30 is completely luck-based, unfortunately. It's sad to see Bungie, a renowned triple-A developer, resort to gimmicky and artificial RNG just so that the game's lifespan extends. This is coming from a future 30, and I intend to carry my less-than-privileged friends throughout our many raid runs to come.
