The human space ships in Old Russia

I have not found any discussions or comments regarding the human built space ships visible everywhere in Old Russia. Why the heck are there three spheres at the top of them?! As an engineer, and great space and technology enthusiast, I cannot figure out how that would work aerodynamically or structurally with such large and heavy objects at the very tip of the space launcher/rocket? If you don't know what I'm referring too, please see this image: http://levelsave.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/10428155_10201189743225847_3616688132077688219_o-600x300.jpg Or this one: http://psgamer.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Destiny-Beta_20140717222900.jpg Or the fact that they greatly resemble the Traveler?! I'm still stopping in Old Russia to just look at them trying to figure out the reason behind their design and function. Edit: Ah, 50 replies :) I thought there would be some interest and discussion on this topic! Thank you for chiming in. Would've been great if one of the game designers would share a hint or logic behind the design of these space launchers. Edit 2: Does anyone have access to fluid dynamics or aerodynamics simulation software? Simulating those three spheres on a simple space launch body would provide insight into how it would behave.

  • There are corrugated shipping cargo containers stuck to the sides. These ships must have been used to ship illegal aliens to another planet. That's the only explaination.

  • That's not a ship, it's anal beads designed for Phogoth's big-ass mom.

    • The ball units are probably tanks for fuel, the center "ship" is merely to get the shuttles through atmosphere and along a long ride before each one takes off alone. Im guessing its like a ferry ship for when not all shuttles were capable of long range flight as the guardian ships are.

    • Wow I think this has been the most intelligent post (comments included) I have ever seen on these forums. Love it. As for my theory. I think those "balls" are actually the colony ships themselves. I mean the traveler gave the humans advanced tech. Why wouldn't resemble the traveler? Oh something else similar to the cars is the passenger plane wreckage guardians and fallen climb all over like a play ground.

      • I have skepticism about their function as well and every time I see them a cringe just a little bit when I think of the craziness of their design. If you look at this from a practical standpoint there is no reason to build such massive ships on the Earth's surface, even with the most advanced and efficient liftoff system imaginable it is monstrously wasteful to build them on Earth. It makes far more sense to have them built in orbit where you could ferry the equipment and materials via orbital elevators. I mean one way you can explain it is that the ships never actually "blast off" from those launching pads and that they are instead simply loaded there and then "transmatted" or otherwise moved into orbit. Remember when they were built the Traveler was still at the height of its power and humanity had some pretty phenomenal technology apparently

        • I think the whole thing is a a space station. Thrusters are clearly attached to the main hull above the other space ships. The spheres sponsored top would be eco-domes or storage/living space for ppl. And dinklebot did say they were used to colonize planets. So you can't really take much in one of those small ships. The smaller ships would detach in orbit brining the ppl to the surface. Whatever it is, it sure as hell isn't mentioned enough in the game

          • My theory has been that they are generators of some sort that create an energy field around the vessel that greatly reduces or eliminates air resistance during take off. Then the ship wouldn't have to be aerodynamic at all.

          • If you look at a lot of the landscape and/or architecture in Destiny objectively, it doesn't make much sense. Why are most caves the way they are, with parts of them having flooring/walls and some not? Why are there random boxes with drapes over them everywhere? Some cars seem out of place. Lots doesn't make sense.

            • To be honest the ships dont really bother me that much. Its the cars on earth and on venus that grate. All this technical prowess and we are still using cars that look like C2's and camper vans. Also our colonies. Peter F Hamiltons fictional commonwealth follows a similar pattern with lots of futuristic stuff with more everyday things thrown in. However in that the people only colonise planets in the goldilocks zone (H congruous as he terms it). Not somewhere so unsuitable as venus. Europa (a la Arthur C Clarkes odyssey series) probably a better idea with jupiter as a second sun if were gonna go way out there. OP is right in some respects. Its almost as though the inital design phase of this game was slightly confused. Id like to get hold of an Art of Destiny book just to see what the briefs and subsequent methodology behind the design was. I know its fictional but little things just blow the suspension of disbelief and you just feel its plain wrong. (Game is still solid tho)

And why do they have space shuttles attached to them? The space shuttle was retired a few years ago and this game is supposed to be hundreds of years in the future. And on that note, we're so far in the future in the game but there's like rusted 1950s looking cars everywhere and the computers look like the same ones they played PONG on back in the day. Stylistically, it gives that whole 2001 A Space Odyssey theme to it. Technically I don't think the shape matters, aerodynamics mean nothing in space since there is no air.

                • As others have said, they're colony ships. Clearly, only an idiot would build them on the surface and launch all that mass of people and supplies in giant spheres when building in orbit and shuttling them up would be massively more efficient (although a space elevator would be better - but Bungie already did one of those in ODST). But, hey, space magic.

                  • Due to their size compared to the space shuttles below them, all I can think of is a concept along the line of Ender's Game with the sphere that was not rotating to simulate no gravity. Also with their size, I feel like the spheres can have very intricate layouts within them to provide a comfortable place of living for the time it takes to travel? Or not necessarily for the living to be up and about, but act as incubators for humanity - humans, animals, plants, etc.? It could go along with the idea the world was evacuating Earth. I personally think it is odd to see those designs of space shuttles during that time period as well...it's along the ideas of the current day car designs appearing all over Earth and Venus still - just confusing.

I think they were fleeing the Traveler. Why would they head towards the Darkness on the edge of space if they were better off at Earth. They were running from the Darkness not to it. It would also explain why the Jovians send Xur to help Guardians become more powerful and not directly help the Traveler and speaker.

Look closely and you can see the heavy payload on the rockets. In addition those rockets were probably designed to travel to far distances. The rockets look like they were about to take off with humans trying to flee earth.

                        • The ships in Old Russia are colonization ships, they're meant to hold much, much more cargo than normal spaceships as well as more passengers. As to how they actually get off the ground? "The Traveler," is probably the correct answer. Why they look like that? Probably everything to do with aesthetics and nothing to do with aerodynamics.

                          • Think about the propulsion systems your ship has..they probably didn't have to worry about being aerodynamic. The purpose for those spheres is probably as a habitat. Fauna, living quarters, supply stores etc.. It looks as though that system isn't meant to come in and out of orbit that much either. Probably a docking station that was never launched.

                          • Speaking of Old Russia, I'm more puzzled by the wrecks of cars and planes. Car wrecks are just normal cars from our age...planes are bigger, but still they're just big boeings. They all seem out of place if you think about the Golden Age and the technological leap mankind did after encountering the Traveler. Same goes for car wrecks on Venus, they just seem modern time cars thrown there...

                            • Im convinced that they are booster/staging rockets to help get the shuttles into space, attempting to maximize fuel cost per person. Cheaper than launching each shuttle individually. I assume those orbs are fuel storage for the booster rockets. No idea why they arent completely aerodynamic, but perhaps the material that they are made of (spinmetal?) is stronger than the norm so it can better withstand forces against it. Who knows though. In video game land, things dont have to make sense.

                                  • To me when you look at the entire structure it seem that it is almost like a space station that could be launched and the spaceships could be deployed after the entire structure is in orbit or during travel.
