Legendary gear - 80 materials
Exotic gear - 64 materials
It probably takes an hour to farm 70-100 materials, big whoop right?
But did I tell you it's going to be the most mind numbingly boring thing you've ever done?
Edit: Alternatives,
buy with glimmer or marks
buy with coins or motes
earn via missions; amount scales by difficulty
earn via crucible
Material bounties
Trade weapon parts or class materials for
Earn during patrols and public events
Edit2-update: You know it's boring when your ascendant materials out number your planet materials
451 ascendant materials
182 planet materials
I even have more strange coins than I do planet materials...
Edit3: Math
Will take you 21.76 hours to farm 1,632 materials if you're gathering 75 per hour on average.
To hit level 29 it will take 304 materials if you have one exotic piece.
To hit level 30 you will most likely replace those pieces with raid equipment. That's another 240
(304+240)3 = 1,632
1,632/75 = 21.76
21.76 very boring hours
This is not taking weapons into consideration.

Get together with a friend and farm/run patrol missions together. Time flies when ur chatting :)
-
You use to be able to get 10 material every assassination mission in patrol (20 if you were rank 1-2 or higher) in the beta
-
Farming is part of any MMO experience - The soul destroying effort is there to ensure you really (REALLY) appreciate the gear you level up, not least of all because it means you don't have to farm anymore for it :)
-
As i do the material farming i try to dot he patrol missions to mix it up, plus running the loop at he base on mars yeilds alot of chests.
-
In this game yes farming is extremely monotonous Never has that problem in a proper mmo thou Ex guild wars 2 I'd farm while wandering the massive world something destiny lacks of course lol

Edited by xAMERICAN MEATx: 10/24/2014 9:31:30 AMMy problem is the fact that if you want gear from the factions you need crucible marks. Well I do not really play crucible all that much so earning 100 marks a week will never happen in pvp for me. My vanguard marks are done Tuesday evening after the reset. So I farm my fuc*ING as* off for material to purchase armor or guns from the factions. I think that they should either A. Let you use vanguard marks for gear from factions B. Let you purchase say 5 or 10 material using 1 mote and or 1 strange coin. C. Let us get some as reward from public events or patrols on given planet.
-
We should get some for finishing the public mission too!!
-
you do realize you can farm one area over and over for about an hour and get around 30-40 materials right? its not even a big deal.
-
-
I enjoy my farming routes. And I do public events and bounties while I do Em usually. I dunno I've always enjoyed farming lol
-
I would like it if enemies dropped materials. Or any of the suggested below.
-
actually enjoy the material hunts, always finding them in new nooks and crannies. glad theres only one place to get each of them. otherwise patrol truly would be a bore and dreaded. is how is see it at the least. two thumbs way up on the game bungie! keep on truckin
-
Mmos may not be your speed if you don't like grinding...... I heard that new Mario kart was fantastic!!! Here's some cheese fore your whine.
-
What about getting from your enemies. You know every MMORPG has that system but noooo Bungie didnt wanna do that...
-
Agreed.
-
I feel the same way... I think the rate and number you get should increase to 3 or 4 atleast. Idk if it increases but I only get one to 2 per chest usually one when I pick it, and sometimes when I get rare items out of the chest which is almost as bad as legendary drops, I'll get 1, 2, or 8 to 12.
-
yh its pony! so boring just a cheap way to make you play the game the longer! borderlands is out now and soon COD :)
-
Yeah, it's an absolute chore. If the intent is to keep people in the game for a few more hours just make a dedicated mission. It could be one the ones already in the game purposely recycled, in pure destiny style, to reward materials...
-
an HOUR?! Really?! I can get 50 in about 10 minutes, more if you get a lucky chest of 2. You're doing it wrong.
-
I say it again. They should make a vendor that sells shards energy and other mats. for motes of light.
-
yea -blam!- farming but gotta do it for dat light
-
Someone at Bungie must be having a good laugh watching gamers go round and round in circles for hours collecting this materials.
-
There is an easy way to approach this. Earth- go to the devil walker public event. Run in a circle across the map and pick up chests and spin metal as you go. Complete public event. Easy. Moon- the starting area go in a circle over the area and pick up the goods. Helium spawns really fast. Venus- drive your bike around and pick up spirit bloom as you go helping newbies out as you go. Relic iron. None of my stuff needs that. Ha!
-
I actually don't mind farming. It's nice to be able to just go out and wander around, explore, find hidden caves and loot chests, and even complete some missions while you're at it. Could even get lucky and get some engrams out there. I got a new jumpship blueprint from a chest which was a nice surprise. :) Nice to be able to take a break from shooting things and still make progress.

buy with strange coins is a good idea. maybe 5 material for 1 coin: so with 13 (enough to buy an armor piece) you can buy enough material (65 material) to upgrade another one.
-
I just want an option to buy them and other items with strange coins that way it's more of a gamble with xur. I think it's would simultaneously balance it all out
