I hate farming planet materials
Legendary gear - 80 materials
Exotic gear - 64 materials
It probably takes an hour to farm 70-100 materials, big whoop right?
But did I tell you it's going to be the most mind numbingly boring thing you've ever done?

buy with glimmer or marks
buy with coins or motes
earn via missions; amount scales by difficulty
earn via crucible
Material bounties
Trade weapon parts or class materials for
Earn during patrols and public events
Edit2-update: You know it's boring when your ascendant materials out number your planet materials

I even have more strange coins than I do planet materials...

Will take you 21.76 hours to farm 1,632 materials if you're gathering 75 per hour on average.
To hit level 29 it will take 304 materials if you have one exotic piece.
To hit level 30 you will most likely replace those pieces with raid equipment. That's another 240
(304+240)3 = 1,632
1,632/75 = 21.76
21.76 very boring hours
This is not taking weapons into consideration.

Never boring for me.. I grab as many bounties as I can. Get the patrol missions and my public event timer out.. And go...... When I have a fireteam member with me. It's that much better...

Im doing farming all the time. Most frequently in the moon, but when is start get boring im travelling to venus or sometimes to mars. I do many public events and farm many chest, gather many materials, so i was sold many many planet material for vanguard marks. Guess what? I purchase 10 legendary gear/weapon for this exhanged vanguard marks and i have so much more that i have enough all the upgrades (ascendent materials sadly not). Not doing crucible but i do daily missions all the time. Strike playlist and weekly heroic rarely. So i earned the my marks mostly with exchanged materials and public events. It takes time, but if you got all three character with full level what else you can do? Whats the point maxing out everything in the first few weeks and then what? Getting ascendent materials is way more frustrating for me.

4 RepliesTL;DR As I keep doing bounties, I never have too much shortage of them. Sure I need to hunt for some missing ones every now and then (just had to upgrade two armor pieces to 30 light that both wanted Spirit bloom), but it's your own fault you don't pick them up when on patrol.

1 ReplyBump get rid of planet materials for weapons and armor that require ascended material. Seriously, it already takes a bunch of experience and ascended material to max out high level gear. Why should we have to spend hours farming pointless planet materials. Its so boring!

1 ReplyApparently you don't understand the concept of multitasking. While you're doing patrol missions, farm the items on the way. You can even pick up mats during story missions if you know where to look. If you have that much ascendant materials, you've clearly been running plenty of Public Events. Ever think of picking up planetary mats while you're doing those?

It's a lot better now after the update. Can't believe haven't seen anyone talking about it. To me, it's the best part of the update. Almost every cave has a chest now when you're doing your farming loops. Same spits, but spawning more frequent. Atleast %40 more now. Farming no longer frustrates me

Or just come out of the strike list and play PATROL...and use the patrols as both an opportunity to earn Vanguard/Faction rep and farm your upgrade materials by hitting the chests in the patrol area you're in. Its only "boring" if you never do it....and then you have to find dozens of them in a short period of time because you need them.

It seems we get the worst features of the RPGmmo feature but then the rest that is lacking from that genre is lacking because "this isnt an MMO". (/gripe over) Also a few other ways of improving it: i believe i grimmoir after "X" amount of patrols you can have a chance to get more resources (+1 so you find 2 in chests and planet resources). this should be extended. rank 3 and 4 should be possible. where you almost always get 2 instead of just sometimes and occasionally get three, then one up again you always get at least two, its more often three and occasonally get 4 materials. This seems fair to me. the mroe you patrol and are in the areas getting the resources the easier it becomes. another method i dont think you mentioned? enemy loot drop. glimmer is nice, weapons and amrour i scrap can be nice, but what would be really nice is if i dont have to break up my enjoyment of killing so often because the enemies drop the odd resource for the planet they are on. It would also make sense. i mean surely the enemies on these planets need resources too?

If you are not willing to put forth the effort, then you shouldn't become more powerful. Pretty basic video game 101 stuff. The reward for this shit job is that you will kick more ass. I can't think of a single RPG or MMO where this isn't the case. And please, don't say this game doesn't have RPG or MMO elements, because it clearly does.

I opened a chest while spinmetal farming once, it gave me a special ammo synthesis and 10 spinmetal, I flipped out coz it meant that I didn't have to farm any longer.

i've farmed helium so much, i know almost every single spawn point. having sound to hear chests and nodes helps loads though. and a mida multi tool would help even more.

4 Replieslol whats funny is that Bungie didn't want people shooting hours on end into a cave, that it wasn't their vision for Destiny, but apparently running in circles opening loot crates is... the irony is off the damn charts. We definitely need another way to get planet materials.

Add bundles of them to strike / daily mission reward for respective planets would be my suggestion. That way you get the mats for actually doing stuff. Or have them come from scrapping blue and purple gear. Or just add a vendor? What else can we spend glimmer on anyway? There's only so many ammo synthesis packs you need. Chest farming =/= content.
