i spent some time surfing through websites and articles and explanations on how a Random Number Generator (RNG) is used in loot systems to determine who gets what. i did not however check credentials and references i just merely took their word if i felt that there was some type of pragmatic thinking involved. this is what i have discovered:
A random number generator basically is a program that takes what they call a seed, which can be anything, that gets multiplied and reduced and changed mathematically depending on different variables in the game. a RNG covers the whole realm of the game not just certain aspects pertaining to you.
With that in mind how it was explained was that your character is given a "number" on dice, if you will; and when you kill a monster the dice are rolled and depending on the outcome of the roll, is what determines which loot gets dropped. Each loot is assigned a number and if you hit that number when the "dice" are rolled, then you get that loot.
Now having reached that conclusion to ME (cant stress the me part enough for value of opinion) that means that they say it is "random", but with all the blue and green drops, that means more of the "numbers on the dice" contain blue and green things or actually nothing at all. Now i am well aware of the fact that if you designated one color of gear or item to one number and leave it like that, even though it was random, there indeed would be more legendaries and exotics floating about because the numbers/loot is evenly distributed.
With that being said i would not mind the total randomness of loot being dropped, if the cryptar decrypted engrams and gave back items of the same color at least 50% of the time. i saw an article where a guy farmed 55 legendary engrams and only got 19 legendary items out of those 55. that is absurd in my opinion and clearly wasted time and effort for "rewards" not worth it.
Which leads me to my questions, what are your thoughts on this loot system and how things are set up? What changes would you like to see that you feel would be beneficial for everybody and not just one party? If you know more about RNG's and how they operate and i am completely wrong or skewed a few parts up, please feel free to set the record straight and enlighten us all.

6 RepliesThank for this post! I personally don't mind the drop system, but I enjoyed farming in dark souls 2(mad warrior and auros, in case you've played) so I suppose for me it's more driven by the though that grinding does pay off... Eventually. Though in fire teams I believe that performance should play more of a role in rewards. I also would've liked to see a different set of drops(or just an increased chance of certain drops) depending on location. Thanks for the great post!

3 RepliesI actually have no issue with the random number generator on the loot system, and for one simple reason - Destiny does not use a strictly RNG loot acquisition system. Many who spend time amassing engrams only to be disappointed by not obtaining purple gear are missing the fact that Bungie has added a guaranteed means of obtaining that very gear in about the same time it took to amass a pile of engrams... Faction reputations and marks = gear. Sure, engrams are great, but I view them as a way to possibly get lucky when I am out workin my way toward better gear under the faction rep an mark grinding. Engrams are like playing the lottery. Those who use only engrams to gear up are playing a get rich quick angle. For those who get angry when a legendary engram becomes a blue item... That's no different than playing the lottery and getting mad you are not an instant millionaire. It's just like going to Vegas and expecting to win money... You will usually leave empty handed and angry. It's all about expectations. Understand the system and keep your expectations realistic. Be thrilled and feel lucky when you win the roll of the dice, and keep on trucking when you don't. I think Bungie is about to help fix these expectations by taking color coding off engrams. Rather then getting a purple engram which turns into a blue, we will get a colorless "unintelligible" engram or some other generic name that shows a chance of a purple, gold, or blue. The issue isn't the system itself, it's the expectation created by the color of the random chance item.

3 RepliesSometimes I think Destiny's RNG should get rid of the "R" and use collected data from player performance and/or time investment in some of the calculations for percentages.

3 RepliesThe short definition: "RNG is a decades old, outdated, unimaginative form of game development primarily used by shoddy video game developers to give the appearance of having in-depth game mechanics and longevity".

tl;dr.

3 RepliesVery informative thanks for taking the time to explain it! I could never figure out why I'm always being screwed over on loot!
