An Open Letter to Bungie: Many of us Understand.

Dear Bungie, With Destiny's launch, there has been a tumultuous storm of opinions and thoughts flying around across the internet. Everybody seems to have an opinion, more often than not a complaint, or an idea of what needs to happen. Arguably poor review scores from many publications feed an ever increasing loop of groupthink and lead to unfair conclusions and accusations about what, from a real perspective, has the potential to turn into a masterpiece. With the forums ablaze with topics lambasting the game you've made, I wouldn't be surprised if, on your part, there is at the least confusion, at most dismay at the exact nature of the friction. I've read the complaints. However, I feel very strongly that everything in Destiny has been meticulously thought out, planned, and implemented. In simpler terms, there is nothing about this game that doesn't feel intentional. It feels to me that every aspect of Destiny as it exists now aligns with your vision, and that you have made the game exactly as you wanted to make it. Those of us who have long time experience with similar games, and really want to see the industry evolve, recognize that Destiny could very well be the beginning of a masterpiece, a revolution in how games are experienced and how stories are told. We play it religiously, and we trust you to develop its universe into something really special. It already has established itself as one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've had, and I'm sure that rings true for those like me. But the adherence to your vision is the cornerstone of positivity for this experience. Destiny is going to be a long road, and vocal members of the community that don't truly grasp Destiny's scope and potential will continue to complain. Likely, it will be relentless. I've already seen people go from complaining that they had too easy of a time getting to the level cap, to complaining that the raids are too hard over 3 DAYS. In fact, Destiny seems to have had 3 years worth of complaining cycles crammed into the 1 week it has been available. We have our journey over Destiny's lifetime, and you, Bungie, have yours. I urge you, remember this: You must unflinchingly adhere to your vision. If anything can be said about the game industry, particularly in MMO type games, it's that "The Customer is Usually Wrong". You can't please everyone, and large scale change will rarely please most. But if every game released is going to strive only to please the most customers, we end up with bland and repetitive titles that rarely venture outside of the status quo. To you I say that you will need to heed this forum's tagline more than any of the users: Be Brave. Don't buckle to the complaints, and don't stray from making what you see because of the outcry of those who don't agree on its beauty. Sincerely, A Fan.

  • Well said man. There will always be those that dislike a game and will complain about several of it's features, but that doesn't mean there isn't a just as large group of people who truly enjoy the game and their voice isn't quite as vocal. No matter what others say, that doesn't mean those who are fans of Destiny can't/shouldn't continue to play and forge their path of becoming legend as Bungie takes us on this 10 year journey. Destiny's world is still wide open and awaits to be explored over time.

    • Not very well said. A dev who doesn't listen to the community is a failure. You don't blindly follow your vision like Obama did with his health care. There are plenty of whiners, but there are plenty of intelligent people that give good criticism to improve the game we love. If you stay satisfied by everything you will get watered down trash for games. So I plead with you do not be a fanboy and don't be a hater. Be in the middle.

      • My negative comment on this game is I can't play it on my X1. It will not go past the start screen button. I have tried every thing possible that has been suggested here and other places with no luck. I use Uverse and do not have any issues with any of the other games on my X1. Till I can play in this game bites. If you cant play it, cant really call it a game.

        • What specifically are you asking them to buckle down on? Most of the complaints are about missing features that can't realistically negatively impact your experience. I don't think I've seen such idiotically devout fanboyism for a company before. It's a good game, but about 50% of the time, the response to legitimate complaints has been "SHUT UP BUNGIE IS DA GREETEST NOTHIN RONG WIT GAME EVER!!!!" Criticism isn't hatred, and 'buckling down' on features that it was ridiculously stupid to leave out of the game will result in a significantly lower shelf-life for everyone involved, including you.

        • well said OP granted, the game needs some tweaking still, but I am grateful for this game and enjoying it. I see that plenty of others are too despite the complainers. I believe in Bungie and the community, and look forward to expanding this new and super cool universe.

          • Well said, Amather. Not a day has gone by since release that someone in party chat hasn't seen or read something amazing and mockingly said "It's really too bad the game is so shallow and pedantic." I know that I am pleased with my purchase, and am excited to see what's coming next.

          • I didnt even read all that it sounded like a lot of puckering up to anus. They sure as heck didnt think out the crucible, worse multiplayer ever! dont think so? you were probably the person nobody wanted on their team in a call of duty match. snipers, shotguns, launchers and knives. nobody wants to insta-die but you cant even get an auto rifle match going everybody is noobified to the fullest.

          • Very well said. Glad to know that there is a group, maybe not as vocal as the negative group, but a group nonetheless of people who actually understand what Bungie is attempting to do here and are willing to wait and see and have fun with the game we currently have now.

          • I agree. I see the reviews coming out badly, but at the end of the day, Im glad I bought this title. The industry dictates what a great game is supposed to be, and when a new game comes out, and doesnt have the neccesary structure to qualify as it's label, people freak out. Others follow the reviews and choose to or choose not to buy a specific title based on what someone else thinks. There are way too many people out there who either cant think for themselves and form their own opinions about an idea, or have to judge it harshly for the sake of doing so. Thankyou to the guy who said what Ive been thinking for a while.

Bravo Fellow Guardian! Its sickens me that there are many who seek to destroy what Bungie has created. I love Destiny and understand as well the vision that they have implemented with this magnificent universe. It will take more time, dedication and efforts for both Bungie devs and us as the Detiny community to make the universe of Destiny even more worthwhile as thats apart of any game you play. I have read the dumbest and most irrational complaints since day 1 of Destiny being released with many who aren't giving Destiny a fair chance and just want to Bungie to change their vision to what they see fit which is...Nothing. If you don't like Destiny then why are you wasting time on the forums complaining? Why don't you play another game and move on with your life? Its because misery loves company and those individuals who only find happiness in being unhappy and complaining which is pathetic to say the least. Bungie has put their blood, sweat and tears into creating Destiny. I was 9 years old when Bungie burst on the scene back in 1991 and Im 32 now and still have the greatest respect for Bungie as they are one of the few gaming companies who does not cave in under pressure from criticism or complaining gamers and they have still been the stronghold mountain of success they are to this day. Every man and woman who have worked on Destiny sacrificed time with their family and friends and themselves to ensure we as a community of gamers enjoy the fruits of their labor. Its sad that some individuals are so miserable and evil that they want to force their opinion upon others just because they have a short sighted outlook of the potential and vision that Bungie has planned for Destiny. Nothing wrong making suggestions fellow Guardians and yea there can be a few improvements made but its another thing to bad mouth Destiny after barely a week of fighting the good fight because you are not a capable Guardian. I think we should be responsible for our own enjoyment and stop looking to point fingers at Bungie as they have gave you so many ways to enjoy Destiny. Have you as a Guardian explored all those options or just focused on one aspect of Destiny? Are you playing with friends or by yourself? You do realize the story will continue with more expansions right? Really ask yourself, why do you dislike Destiny so much? Is it truly rhe game or is it just you? Remember, point one finger at Bungie and three back at yourself. I have not loved a game so much since Pokemon and for those who love Bungie and Destiny as much as I do, lets defend and send the naysayers/haters/complainers back to the Darkness from which they came and continue our journey throughout Destiny. From the present and future Guardians of the world. Thank You Bungie for creating this astounding and gorgeous universe you have created with Destiny which shall revolutionize the gaming industry for many years to come. Give it time fellow Guardians and don't be so quick to lash out and judge our beloved Destiny for flaws but moreso for the many outstanding qualities it does have. Why not focus on what Destiny has given us? Being negative always doesn't solve anything either as Im sure Bungie listen to those who can construct their feedback in a positive and respectable manner. On that note..... May The Traveler's Light Always Be With You. PsychoZero30 Guardians of Judgement Member (PS4)

            • You are good at book learning and stuff. Seriously though, well thought out and I tend to agree with a lot that you have to say. Especially the portion about "3 years complaining cycle" and the same people complaining "too easy, too hard" within 3 days.

            • Well written; well said and I back this 100%. To go along with that theme I leave a quote from Mr. Steve Jobs: "People don't know what they want until you show it to them." Complaints are simply misconceptions about individual perceptions of what people thought the game would be. I don't doubt Bungie will, in time, show folks exactly what they want as this game evolves.
