An Open Letter to Bungie: Many of us Understand.

Dear Bungie, With Destiny's launch, there has been a tumultuous storm of opinions and thoughts flying around across the internet. Everybody seems to have an opinion, more often than not a complaint, or an idea of what needs to happen. Arguably poor review scores from many publications feed an ever increasing loop of groupthink and lead to unfair conclusions and accusations about what, from a real perspective, has the potential to turn into a masterpiece. With the forums ablaze with topics lambasting the game you've made, I wouldn't be surprised if, on your part, there is at the least confusion, at most dismay at the exact nature of the friction. I've read the complaints. However, I feel very strongly that everything in Destiny has been meticulously thought out, planned, and implemented. In simpler terms, there is nothing about this game that doesn't feel intentional. It feels to me that every aspect of Destiny as it exists now aligns with your vision, and that you have made the game exactly as you wanted to make it. Those of us who have long time experience with similar games, and really want to see the industry evolve, recognize that Destiny could very well be the beginning of a masterpiece, a revolution in how games are experienced and how stories are told. We play it religiously, and we trust you to develop its universe into something really special. It already has established itself as one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've had, and I'm sure that rings true for those like me. But the adherence to your vision is the cornerstone of positivity for this experience. Destiny is going to be a long road, and vocal members of the community that don't truly grasp Destiny's scope and potential will continue to complain. Likely, it will be relentless. I've already seen people go from complaining that they had too easy of a time getting to the level cap, to complaining that the raids are too hard over 3 DAYS. In fact, Destiny seems to have had 3 years worth of complaining cycles crammed into the 1 week it has been available. We have our journey over Destiny's lifetime, and you, Bungie, have yours. I urge you, remember this: You must unflinchingly adhere to your vision. If anything can be said about the game industry, particularly in MMO type games, it's that "The Customer is Usually Wrong". You can't please everyone, and large scale change will rarely please most. But if every game released is going to strive only to please the most customers, we end up with bland and repetitive titles that rarely venture outside of the status quo. To you I say that you will need to heed this forum's tagline more than any of the users: Be Brave. Don't buckle to the complaints, and don't stray from making what you see because of the outcry of those who don't agree on its beauty. Sincerely, A Fan.

    • Narrative in a story is far more complex then most people understand. I think it is laughable when people state that Destinys story is shallow and non existent. I see 6 or more introductions laided out before me and I am damn willing to see where they go as they hooked me in. The mystery of this game is outstanding. Pathetic that people are so void of abstract thought and critical thinking. They can't see this. Oh well thier loss. I'll see this through guardians.

    • Hey destiny i spent a 108. On your piece of shit game. Way to go on making the crucible like gay ass call of duty aka campung in corners with shot guns, and also making the campaign hella short, -blam!- the ranking up set up too. Not an expert on making video games but this game is pure shit. One cool thing is the free roam in story mode. Wish i could get a refund but i learned my lesson never -blam!- with bungie.

    • I couldn't agree more to stick with your vision Bungie. You have created what is shaping up to be a truly remarkable world for us to enjoy for years. Side note, I for one am glad to hear the end game content is very challenging. That is what will make our victory that much more memorable. Keep the truly challenging raids and other content coming. Kudos to Bungie.

    • Just look at Defiance and what it has become. At release, it was very fun and interactive. Money and complaining ruined the game into the ground. Well said and I can only hope that Destiny does't bother with the whiners. Whiner Feedback Loop: -Bitch about game mechanic -Game mechanic changes. -Bitches that changes were not right. -Game changes again. -Hate the mutant final product. -Move on to the next game. -Find new forums/messaging system to implement attacks on game developers. -Rinse and repeat Signed, -Snap

      • Games are supposed to be fun. Many hardcore gamers are too busy shitting on games to enjoy them. They want to find things wrong and enjoy negativity. I enjoy games on a far more casual level nowadays. Destiny has its flaws. But I am having fun - with my friends. Bungie got that right for me. So, I don't really care what anyone else thinks. And I don't feel the need to waste time analyzing every design decision that was made. I spend my limited gaming time.....playing the game.

      • Destiny is a great game that may meet its end before it could become great due to a bunch of problems that work together to make the game come off less than it is. Most of these things are balancing which makes me sad that a few balancing issues could bring this great game to such a low place.

Destiny has many glaring flaws. So apparent are its short comings and horrible its first impression that it's easy to think the game is decidedly subpar. But if you look closely, Destiny also did a lot of subtle things right and in the end made a very addictive game when played with friends. It's like you hate it for the waisted potential and pathetic story but keep playing it anyways. I myself changed my metacritc review from a 6/10 to an 8/10 when I realized I put over 30hrs into the game in about a week. I couldn't play a 6/10 game for more than a few hours and have played several 9/10 games for a lot less time than that, albeit with much higher highs than Destiny provides. It's like when you consciously break the game down into its constituent elements none are very good and some parts are horrible, but for some inexplicable reason you keep going back to it. Its very inferior parts managed to make an addictive whole, so if I extrapolate just from my desire to keep playing and the hours already played, Destiny is a good game...even though I can't think of one good reason why I like it. Time will tell whether I keep playing after the numerous other big releases arrive in the coming months. I could just be playing because I have nothing better on my PS4 at the moment. AND if it had an amazing story it would have reviewed much better.

        •
Arguably poor review scores from many publications feed an ever increasing loop of groupthink and lead to unfair conclusions and accusations
So when bungie push hate on the GTA launch this was all fair and fine. How does bungie's hypocrisy here even start to make sense (especially when many of the issues had been raise in both the Alpha and Beta) ... this is down to bungie, 100%. How is bungie failing to meet its own benchmarks down to anyone else but bungie. Again people tried to warn them loud and clear in both the Alpha & Beta trial - but they refused to change a thing. This is down to bungie, 100%.

          • Well constructed and easy to read since it wasn't negative nancy flaming post. ,y dad always said if you look for bad you'll find bad, look for good you'll find good. Nice objective reasoning in tieing both the positive and negative together. It's refreshing to read a comment for improvements while acknowledging flaws. People are never happy and it's such a negative world it's nice to hear applaud. Well done

          • your right destiny has changed the game industry before anygame with a big name behind it and plenty of hype would get a minimum 8/10 destiny is the first to prove this wrong
there is nothing about this game that doesn't feel intentional
thats the problem bungie intentionally didnt allow guardians to talk easily and be social bungie intentionally didnt put any social support features in the game they intentionally didnt attempt to make some kind of group finder feature for raids/nightfalls they intentionally made every character boring and bland wasting good voice acting they intentionally cut out the 3rd subclass for future dlc and they intentionally kept all interesting PvE variation for just the raid destiny's only saving graces are the core gameplay is top notch and it has the ability to change to become better than what it is now
You must unflinchingly adhere to your vision

The Customer is Usually Wrong
I wonder if you had this stance for Xbox one's always online.........

            • So here's my view: Destiny is for sure one of the most interesting games I believe many of us have seen in a while. Some think the interesting is bad, some think it's really damn good. While I can see both points with great clarity, I don't really have a damn opinion. Now, I come from Star Wars: The Old Republic, and was a hardcore console gamer before then. SWTOR is not the greatest MMO ever created. The graphics don't really stand out, most of the stories in game aren't really interesting (except for a few which are done incredibly well), and a couple of other things. Even a game that has been running for almost 3 years now still isn't close to perfect, and no game will ever be (except for Freespace. That's the only game that I've ever felt is perfect.) My message to all the haters: Keep your pants on. This game will be a stepping stone to a new type of gameplay that you WILL be seeing in the future. I guarantee it. There will be bugs and other aspects of game play that may need to change. (For example the spawning system in PvE. Hostiles should spawn in locations away from the players, not in set places.) Eventually Bungie and Activision will get their shit together and fix some of the main flaws of the time. Just be patient. My message to the praisers: This game is not perfect, and will not be for a long time. I really enjoy this game too, and most of everything about it. But just because you love it, don't turn a blind eye to the issues that are staring you in the face (as surprising as this is I see it everywhere). This game, as perfectly made as some as you say, wasn't made EXACTLY the way the devs wanted it to be when it released. But I do know that their goal will be to make the game closer and closer to what their "true" vision is. My message to the Developers: Keep doing the good work. But keep this in mind, "The customer is USUALLY wrong." This doesn't mean that they always will be wrong, and some of our ideas could (and will) shape the game. So keep an eye out for the smart people on the forums. Just ignore the closed-minded folks that will post here.

            • I have since found out that is intentional and was designed that way. It is not an error but the lack of explaing the mechanics of the game. Destiny 'is what it is' but exactly what that is nobody knows. Even a basic faq would have gone a long way in avoiding most of the complaints. To leave us to get frustrated by an unknown design is silly when a simple bit of info would have solved so much.

            • I really hope Bungie reads this amazing, well written and thought out letter. I feel exactly as you feel, except i'm not an english Ph.D. Lol I hope they do what they feel is right, and not what the whining players keep complaining about. People who know what a MMO is and love shooters i feel are the ones who best understand the game Bungie intends to create... Even if Bungie claims this is not an MMO... Great post!!!

              • Agree with it all except the part where you say they're gonna revolutionise gaming because millions have said it but 9/10 they have been wrong only has halo 1,2 and COD (especially MW1) ever done that. (Btw not saying COD is any good anymore)
