Update from Ohio Northern University IT:
"Right now we do not have the resources to work on this issue. The ticket may be reexamined later in the year after the high priority tickets are completed. The firewall blocks incoming connection attempts only. Applications such as games that don't work due to the firewall are likely attempting to publish services to, and accept unlimited connections from, the entire Internet. That is not allowed. Our Procera device blocks, via heuristics, a variety of protocols typically used in file sharing applications that would flood the network with large amounts of non-academic, non-business traffic and crowd out other users. Applications such as games that don't work may also be attempting to leverage such protocols. That is not allowed."
This is absolutely ridiculous! Other universities are willing to work on the issue and mine won't even bat an eye at it. If there is any one from ONU on the forms, please contact the IT Department and give them a stern email. Perhaps we can convince them to rethink about 'not having the time to work on the ticket'.

Got it working, its late so I am not gonna test for long, but check out these instructions http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2fz721/possible_fix_for_college_error_code_centipede/ Cheers man!

Do you think it would be frowned upon here if I used a VPN to play this?
-
I know that other schools have policies against them and I looked at the student handbook and it didnt say anything explicitly about vpn. That doesnt mean though if they catch you they could tie to some violation.
-
Yeah, I was looking through stuff and didn't see anything about it. I might do it this weekend, especially if bungie doesn't say anything about a patch
-
If you figure how do it and successfully get on, let me know

woah woah woah dude. calm down. IT department didnt say they WOULDNT. they said they would take care of more important things first. dont freak out on them just because they arent fulfilling the desire of a smaller number of people. i mean . . . which do you prefer. playing destiny? or a virus that steals all your personal information including bank accounts credit cards and social security numbers? unless there being intentional assholes about it (always a possibility) cut them some slack

Edited by Christian K: 9/10/2014 6:13:15 PMBeing the start of the semester, colleges are swamped with tickets that are more important to staff, faculty, and students that allow them to do their job and complete their work. Allowing a video game to work properly is understandably low on their list. I'm sure they want to help, but a lot of IT departments are either understaffed or literally do not have the time to work on issues like these. I know you're frustrated (as am I) but being argumentative or angry with the IT department isn't going to help anything.

And the game isn't a freaking "application that is attempting to publish services to, and accept unlimited connections from, the entire Internet."
-
Well, yes it is, requesting some hundred inbound ports opened. An enterprise, statefull, firewall can typically handle a device initiating connections outbound, and opening ports as needed, as long as they're originating from the inside device. Inbound ports are only needed if you have a service, like a web server, that listens on a port for any old outsider to come in and connect. If, as you say, the game doesn't have such listening services, then it doesn't need so many inbound ports (if any at all) opened to the Internet. In support of my point, see all the other games that are working while only Destiny appears to be broken. Just my two cents' worth.

Bungie if you are seeing this, please get in contact with Ohio Northern University's IT Department and explain to them what is going on and work out a solution with them?
-
I just got this email as well. I'm pissed. Any suggestions for what to say in the email?
-
I just told them what's up: 1) Only reason to open the firewall and open our ports is to allow us to access Destiny's servers 2) Other university IT network staff have worked on the issue and are collaborating with students and Bungie to devise a solution to the problem. I sure hope something get's fixed whether it be on our end or Bungie's, I do not want to have to wait to fall break / thanksgiving / christmas break / spring break and graduation just to play Destiny.
