  • Hey, ExelArts, I just watched the demo video of Manga Studios. It looks like a really nice piece of software. The only reason I stick with Photoshop is because that's what I began with years ago. I use a large Intuos5 tablet. I really don't take advantage of it as I should. I do use the zoom tool and a few others but the most important tool of all is the one I created and assigned. It’s a ‘flip canvas horizontally’ button. I don't know if you can create this for Manga Studios but it's very important that you flip your canvas constantly while drawing to make sure your image is maintaining proper proportions and your composition maintains balance. As time goes by while drawing your brain begins see things improperly. You brain begins to fill in details and proportions that are incorrect but are no longer consciously realized. When you flip your canvas it forces you to look at the image anew. You immediately will notice issues or problem that you had become ‘blind’ to while drawing. I find myself flipping the canvas constantly while working. You can also flip your canvas vertically to spot composition issues or ‘grouping’ issues in regards to your lights and darks. In regards to your software, I don’t know a lot about Manga Studios, as I stated, but I can tell you that my personal philosophy is to avoid using any filters. For example, If you need to soften items, or unfocus an object, draw them that way. Don’t rely on a filter. It just mixes things up. Adjust the transparency of your brush stroke instead. Another personal preference is to use as few brushes as possible. The more brushes I use the more confusing I think my images become. I try to keep it very simple. I hope that helps a little. If you have any other questions just let me know. Thanks

  • Try using the 'brush opacity' to control your shading as opposed to the blender tool. This allows the shadow to bleed together as opposed to trying to guess next value of a shadow gradient. Keep in mind that rarely is the quality of light in the shadow the same hue as the lit surface. Usually a secondary light source or perhaps a refraction or bounce from a different surface casts a different hue into the shadow area. Even if the light is the same temperature, the color of the surface its refracting off of may be different. Does that make sense? If not let me know and I show you a bit more in detail. Also take a look at 2 and 3 point lighting.
