You can play at 12:01 PST and 3:01 EST which are the same time. Sorta lame for you east coasters but Microsoft/Sony probably don't have a reliable way to source your exact location to establish your timezone.
Luckily here in Oregon I can play at midnight. I already have my digital guardian edition preloaded and ready to go.

There are multiple ways they can confirm your location....if they choose to use/implement them. Examples: 1: Use smartglass, Open the smartglass app have it ping GPS and there you go....location confirmed. This could also be done using the Microsoft authenticator app 2: Microsoft also dual layer security on your account....so they could verify phone number. (Use area code and exchange for location verification) also, they could use the billing address of the CC linked to the account. 3: via IP .....although with smart DNS this could be bypassed They could also require you to pass two of these checks in order to play at the correct time. I Feel that because i bought into the the all digital future of Xbox that i am being punished

And that all sounds so much easier and more reliable than just releasing the game once at a unified time. I don't blame them. Why spend the time and resources setting up all these methods and countermeasures to handle people cheating the system?

Microsoft has been touting a a digital future.....but the way it stands it, most people that are going all digital are being punished. (For numerous reason, which i will not go into) I Could buy it from Amazon , get the game a day or two early. (Bungie has stated the game will be playable when it is midnight somewhere,the earliest it will be midnight on 9/9/2014 is the UTC or GMT time zones that means, i will be playing @ 8pm EDT on 9/8/2014 with a disk!

Yeah, that's really my only gripe here. Also, I hope people in European countries understand they'll be playing almost half a day after the game releases there.

My locale game store is 5 minutes away and opens at 10 AM (i have a Limited edition booked but not paid waiting there) And i have ordered a copy from a webstore that usually arrives day before release. The company that lets me play earliest gets my money :D

Ohhhh, didn't read the part about the physical copy getting there a day early. Yeah, I don't think too much thought was put into the digital pre-load thing.
