  • Yes, and we could all get hit by a comet or giant asteroid. Certain things you can plan for, others you cannot. :-P I normally live in L.A. and I was living in Granada Hills (which is right next to Northridge) in '94. That was some crazy, scary shit, but most people survived. Let's all be part of the "most people"!

  • I was almost 17 and I was sleeping over at my best friend's house at the time. We were up playing some football game on his Genesis at the time the earthquake happened (it was either Madden or Joe Montana). His dad was always getting on to us for staying up so late in the morning, but sure enough that's what we were doing, and it probably saved my life. When the earthquake hit there was this gigantic boom that sounded and felt like an explosion in the ground. The TV literally popped up off of its stand a foot if not more and crashed right where my head would have been had I been asleep. I jumped to the doorway and my buddy jumped a moment later and as he did so, everything in his room (and I mean, everything) collapsed on to the space where we both had just been and the lights went out immediately after. It was like watching a scene from an action movie. It was very surreal. More craziness ensued like a house behind us catching on fire, a giant gout of flame rising up what seemed like a hundred feet in the air from a gas station on Balboa and Rinaldi, Balboa being flooded due to broken water mains, not being able to reach my family for a few hours, the western morning sky ominously glowing orange (the sun rises in the east), my apartment building being condemned, not having power or running water for over a week, but later on after all was said and done we told his dad about how I might have been seriously injured if not worse if we had been asleep and how playing video games saved my life! He never got on to us after that and I never was foolish enough to sleep with my head near a large heavy object ever again. I don't often think of it anymore since it's been over two decades, but when I do, I'm reminded of all of the chaos that surrounded it. Thankfully, very few people actually died. Hopefully, no one will die from the hurricanes in Hawaii.
