The engram thing... engrams do more than just give you loot. The up your cryptarch level. Which gives you the ability to buy better engrams. Also if you level up the cryptarch enough you get special rewards like rare/legendary engrams. (I would know.. my cryptarch rank is 7)
There was a rumour going around that starting a new character and fighting harder enemies would yield more engrams that you could then place in your vault for your main to use.
I tried doing this. While I got a handful, it wasn't nearly as many as I get when I farm with my main.

higher level cryptarch gives better engram drops and better gear when you decrypt them, at rank 10 i pulled almost all blues, at rank 15 it was all blues except for here and there the occasional legendary and even more rare was a green i could actually use

Not really...I only played on 1 character the whole beta, my grimoire score is over 700, and I would farm til i hit 20k glimmer, then I'd turn in about 15-20 engrams, and if he had any green engrams in the gear i wanted, I'd buy about 10-15k worth of them, check the other vendors, and then go start again, it only takes maybe an hour or so to farm that up if you know how and what you're doing

Lots of head shots is my best strategy...i notice more drop more often with consecutive head shot kills...but is kinda only a theory
