Agreed. I cringed when I read the title. Thought OP was asking for micro-transactions, which I am firmly against in a retail priced game.

"Tower is supposed to be a social hub". It's really not though, there's no in game communication with randoms, simply being clustered in the same area does not make it social. By that logic the DMV is social.
