I still think that cosplay gets the most attention at cons.
If I really wanted to have girls throw themselves at me as much as possible I'd probably go as one of those guys from Free. But going to that extreme is not worth it until I get to total desparation for a gf.

I want to cosplay but my mom stubbornly refuses to teach me how to sew, and buying cosplay is expensive.

I usually choose a basic yet recognizable character and then try to just keep an eye out for the clothes that match. Something like if I wanted to be Sora from NGNL I'd look for a long sleeve purple shirt and a yellow t-shirt to put over it. I could probably go to a con as like 5+ characters and I have never sewn once.
-
I would probably go as Shinji Ikari because I can get all the casual clothes easily, but I wanted to do a more popular/complex character that actually involves a costume.

I'll tell you the weirdest thing about cosplay. If you actually meet and talk to other cosplayers, you can not envision them as being normal people even after the con ends. Like I still have a hard time thinking of Homestuck cosplayers not going around the normal world being gray-skinned freaks; I have nothing else to go off of.
-
Well that's because Homestuck cosplayers are....different.

i hang out with them and i am in total agreement
