LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - A Good Friday crucifixion display didn't quite go as planned as Lee county sheriff's deputies ordered "Jesus" to come down from the cross and move the show elsewhere. "This gentleman has had a passion on his heart to do a representation public," one of the display organizers said of the man who was tied to the cross. But it also generated some angry passion among drivers and pedestrians who didn't think the display should be set up right next to a busy intersection on public property. Traffic backed up as drivers slowed down to catch a glimpse and take pictures. Other passersby believed the bloody display was too much for children and others who might not be prepared for the very realistic scene. Lee sheriff's deputies showed up after getting complaints. Fox 4 asked one of the display organizers what the sheriff's office told them people were complaining about. "Near accidents," said the organizer. "That we're on public property, and we shouldn't be here." He said the sheriff's office told him, "there were a lot of close calls with accidents and traffic back ups," because of the display. A spokesman for the Lee County Sheriff's office told us the display was creating a public safety hazard because of traffic danger. But some people who stopped to see the display were furious to see it disappearing. "It's ridiculous that they're making you take him down," one woman told the organizers. "I really think we need to recognize and be reminded of what Jesus did for us," said another woman. "I wish it would have stayed," she said of the display. She and others who stopped to show support said they didn't understand why some consider the fake blood and wounds "inappropriate." "Jesus is appropriate for everywhere," she said. "Kids need to see how he was born and hung from the cross for us," said another woman who took a picture of her son with the man playing Jesus. "And I yes I honestly do think it's appropriate," she added. The man playing Jesus also weighed in as he was untied from the cross. "Easter is not about bunny rabbits and little chicks," he said. "This what our Christ endured for us. For our sins." "And to hide that, is to not to live to the true faith of what he did for us," he added. Organizers said they made a conscious decision to put up the display alongside the busy road instead of the campus of a church. "It's a very public place out in the middle of town," said one organizer. "When Jesus was crucified, he was done so right on edge of down where everyone would come by." When asked about how this might affect people who didn't want to see such a display, the man playing Jesus paused, and then said, "It's just one of those necessities." One woman who didn't want the display to go was still in awe as the cross was taken down and hauled away on a trailer. "I think it's the most amazing thing I've ever seen," she said. "I've only seen this in books."
http://www.jrn.com/fox4now/news/Crucifixion-Controversy-255812551.html

  • Public displays like this one are done around the world, however they dont put it in the middle of a friggin road. Weather this is acceptable for public display or not, I do think they could have picked a more appropriate place to put it.

  • If anything it should've been at his church, where Jesus worship is known to happen. Not causing a spectacle at a busy intersection where there were plenty of Near accidents.. It's like people see a damn display of Jesus being crucified and they lose all sense.

  • Irrespective of it being a distraction for drivers, for anyone saying this was acceptable in a public place (meaning children could see it), do you think it would also be appropriate to allow children to watch a movie such as The Passion of the Christ? After all, the movie more accurately portrays what happened to Jesus, and according to some of you, it's OK for children to know about that.

    • I have a couple considerations: 1st, let's take Easter and Jesus aside for a second. Would the display of any other person being crucified on any other day be acceptable? If not, then this display would also be inappropriate, as I disagree with special rights being granted to religious organizations. 2nd, the use of public property comes into question. On the one hand, public property is just that, public, and everyone has a right to be there. That being said, most city ordinances have special requirements for large displays or events that may impact other people's use of the space. I'd be curious to know whether this city has such ordinances, and whether the organizers followed them if they exist.

      • The blood seems like a bit much... Other than that, I don't see that much of a problem. People just need to learn to be more accepting of other beliefs and cultures.

          • Well, it was public property. The government did not fund it. He was expressing his religious freedoms as well as his freedom of free speech. So, he had every right to do it.

                • This sums up American Christianity for me. They want the pretty sermons, the singing and false sense of moral superiority, but none of the costs or gruesome imagery associated with it. According to their beliefs that shit went down like that. Yet they can cry about a war on Christmas when a rabbi wants to put a Menorah up in the Denver airport, but not look at the bloody spectacle their entire religion is founded on less little Timmy gets a nightmare. The hypocrisy is mind numbing.

                  • That's actually a pretty cool display, but It was insensitive to display so publicly. Especially at an intersection. Maybe someplace less dangerous, and it would be okay.

                  • Acceptable to display? Yes. In this location? No. Why? It's an intersection, where the only thing people should be looking at is the lights and other cars.

                      • I say no. Why? Because it looked too real. You don't need to make a display of anything that resembles torture.

                        • I don't think this was appropriate for two reasons. The first is obvious; a public intersection where people will rubberneck and very likely cause an accident. In the interest of safety to everyone on the road, drivers need to be distracted as little as possible. Secondly, the re-enactment/depiction/display of Jesus on a cross is absolutely not appropriate or acceptable in public. The only reason, and I mean only reason, people can possibly think this is acceptable is because of its religious connotations. When you take a step back and look at it for what it is, it is of a man that is bloodied, has flesh hanging off him, has nails driven through his hands and feet (in this case it looks close enough to it), and is mounted upon a cross for everyone to observe while he supposedly dies. If a similar display were erected, there would undoubtedly be universal outrage.

                        • I don't think the appropriate place for that is near a busy intersection. Of course, they can certainly display that, but not where it would cause crashes from accidents.
