Everything seems way too light, that's either my monitor or the scanner, I quickly darkened it on PS anyways. But basically to reiterate on Cal's point you need to use a wider range of values, which I know is a real pain with just pencils shading large spaces.
You could try a few quick value studies with other mediums (charcoal, markers, digital were my go-to) to get a good range, and just do quick test sketches.
But still, that's definitely a great first portrait, better than my first for sure, and it's always good to push the parts you're weaker in.

Thanks for the critique and good ideas. I'm currently re-working it finishing the deeper shading like Cal's comment suggested. I have used charcoal before (in other past projects), but I like pencil best for a portrait as it has finer tips and shading I think. And yes, it's really light. The physical copy is actually a tad darker than the way it turned out when I scanned it, but I'll work on that. I'd like to do something involving this sort of stuff (even if it's digital) when I start college, so I'm always welcoming critiques and working on what I'm worst at.
