I've only really got invaded in The Shaded Ruins but I invade people with any cracked red eye orbs I have. I'm in the sunbro covenant so I don't have the actual red sign soapstone.

You don't lose covenant rank if you leave anymore, at least I don't think. Just Brotherhood of Blood after beating the Executioner Chariot and you can buy the red sign soapstone, you DON'T have to be in the covenant to use it.

Example You are in the dragonbro covenant and you are Dragonbro +1 and you need 1 more dragon scale to be a Dragonbro +2, you leave it and come back, you'll stay in Dragonbro +1 but you will lose the 9 scales you offered to progress to to dragonbro +2.
