Rate capitalism out of 5

5/5: Perfect system; little to no problems

30

4/5: Good system; its issues are acceptable

72

3/5: Decent system; it at least gets the job done

131

2/5: Poor system; livable, but far from ideal

48

1/5: Absolute disaster; little to no benefits

22

No opinion one way or the other

20

The poll is going to make this pretty hard to get accurate opinions, so try not to focus on it too much. Post your opinion in the comments before you vote, if you can.

  • No system we come up with will work. The systems works fine, its just we always manage to pervert it and screw it up.

        • Almost a year ago I made this poll and voted 2/5. Now I'm back and voting 4/5.

            • I honestly think it would be about 3.5, but that's not an option so I'll vote for 3/5. It works well, but certainly has its flaws.

            • Capitalism is good for the market, and promotes development in technology, among other things. But a completely capitalist system isn't good for the school system and healthcare. In fact, in a completely capitalistic society there would be no official school or healthcare, only private institutions. A socialistic society may have better school and healthcare, as long as it doesn't tip over to a dictatorship with five-year plans. Those never work out. But even if the school and healthcare works, the free market wouldn't. The best option would be a society with elements from both capitalism and socialism. Let there be a official system to keep the basic functions running, and provide as high of a quality as possible. And let there be a free market where competition is promoted. Let this include basically everything except law enforcement. Even if public school and healthcare is offered, let people be able to choose alternatives.

              • It depends on how it's implemented. Regulated capitalism is good. Unregulated capitalism is shit and it's the reason for the economic crash in 2008.

                • Capitalism is a rich industry with lots of opportunities and a fair justice system. Downsides are definitely the poverty stricken regions that make it almost impossible to move up on the social scale, possibly due to poor funding and education in the areas and corporations taking advantage of their environment. I'm feeling a light 4 on this one Let me know what you think about capitalism, do you love it? Hate? and why. This has been Anthony Fantano. Capitalism, forever.

                • The benefits of capitalism also cause the drawbacks. Theoretically, capitalism promotes competition, which leads to innovations and inventions, in the ultimate goal of money. And that is also it's biggest flaw, Capitalism has made money mean more to people than anything, more than than other people's lives, more than the countries' benefit, and more than the ENVIRONMENT ITSELF.

                    • Hmm. In most capitalist run countries, most occupants have a relatively convienent lifestyle. All that is required to keep all your nice sparkly benifits, is that you work, make money, and spend money. However, the consumer based setup cares little of the costs and damage done to things in certain aspects. In other words, if it doesn't generate any money, it's off the radar entirely. The second is, when somebody, or particularily a large sum of people dislike the system and make their voice quite loud, the head honchos just nod quietly, and the present their counter. "Okay, you guys don't like the way things are? Well, we'll take your house, your job, and all the nice comfy and cool things you own that you haven't paid off. We'll shut things down, and see how you all like it." Capitalism is fine when left alone to do it's own thing, but when disturbed, it's not a happy camper. So, work as a part of the system all your life, and in return for it, you get access to a lot of really nice things. But stand up to it, and you'll end up in the shitter real fast. And, worst of all, environmental problems are ignored entirely. I'm stuck in between a 3 and a 2. It's a decent system in that it provides a lot of eye candy for those who participate in it, but in the background, there's a lot of disparity between the upper and lower classes, as well as the blatent ignorance shown about environmental destruction. I'll go with 2. It's a liveable system, but far away from being ideal.
