Vien felt like he was descending into a world of fog. He couldn't see anything, but memories called out to him. Images and shapes floated past him in the foggy world, but none of them made any sense. He was looking for something, but he didn't know what he was looking for. Why was he here? Where is this place? Vien vaguely remembered a large plant, then he remembered inhaling a foul smoke. Memory....he was searching for memory...he didn't know why, but he knew he had to find it. Suddenly, out of the fog came a blue gleaming. Vien walked towards this light that pierced the fog and saw the forerunner artifact. The same one that he had taken with him into this world, the same one that had helped him escape from the human government. He reached out towards the artifact but stopped...he began to hear screams. No...he began to remember screams, screams of somebody he once loved. Something told him he did not want to remember. "YOU MUST FACE YOUR PAST" a booming voice spoke inside his head, "IF YOU WANT TO SAVE THE FUTURE." Vien reached for the artifact again and touched it. The blue gleaming brightened until it burned away the fog. The world became a blinding blue light. But then it dematerialized and Vien was on solid ground. He recognized this place, it was sanghielios. His hearts jumped for joy when he saw a sanghieli youth running towards him with a practice sword. How could he forget about this child, his son, Valuken? Overwhelmed with joy, he ran towards is son to pick him up...but his son ran through him as if he didn't exist. Vien spun around and came face to face with himself, play fighting with his son, training him in the ways of the sword. He longed to hear his son's laughter again. A chime rang through his head and the blue light took over the world. "NOOO!" Vien shouted, running towards the spot where his son was and reached out. But he touched nothing. The blue light dematerialized and he gasped. If he had not seen the remains of his residence, he would not have known this was sanghielios. The world had changed, the rocky plateau had turned into squirming gummy worms. Flying fried chicken rained destruction upon the world in the form of missile crumbs. Vien saw himself run out of the house with his son in his arms "HOLD ONTO ME!" he heard himself shout, "YOUR MOTHER IS WAITING FOR US!" He followed behind himself and watched as his past self dodged swarms of horny grunts, exploded the inflated heads of 6 breasted brutes with his plasma rifle, and jumped over huge mouths that opened up in the ground. He was headed for a gravity lift coming from a large battleship. Vien watched as his past self and his son entered the gravity lift and began to float up. Flying horrors came at them, fried chicken, watermelon spawn, trash talking rocks with wings. But Vien shot through all of them with stunnign accuracy. But just before he reached the top, a black disk materialized right over his son. Vien and his past self shouted with horror as tentacles reached out of the void and snatched his screaming son, pulling him out of existance. The black disk vanished. The blue light blinded the world again. This was too terrible. He had a son...and he let him be taken by the bane. Valuken was just inches away but Vien couldn't protect him. He was a failure. The blue light dematerialized. Vien was with Jane....no...Kiala, his wife, trying to escape from the Bane's attack on Earth. The fabric of reality of crashing around them, but he had to get Kiala out of here....he did not want to lose her, he would have nothing left to live for. He watched as an observer, seeing himself fight off a Chicken wing as Kiala boarded the ship. Blue orbs were materializing all around him, sucking everything in into their depths that wasn't the bane. He had defeated the monster and almost made it to the ship, his hands extended to Kiala, when monstrous blue orb appeared behind him. It was larger than even the ship Kiala stood in. Vien watched as the orb sucked his past self into it. He was tumbling through a dark void, there was no sound, no sight. He was the only thing that existed in that world. But the the dark void burned away, revealing a bright world below him. He was falling...falling...then he crashed against a strange flying machine, causing it to spiral out of control and crash into the desert. The blue light took over the world again. When it dematerialized, Vien saw himself sitting in a room, much skinnier. He had spent years being interrogated by the government, freely giving out all he knew about where he came from, everything he knew about how his technology worked. Now he had nothing else to give. His son was dead, Kiala was gone, and his universe was probably destroyed by now. Vien remembered how he had felt sitting there, staring at nothing. He wanted to get out and see the world that still lived, but they never let him. He was their prisoner, being kept in that room, forced to live with his memories, memories that would haunt him throughout the day and throughout the night. That very night when he had fallen asleep, he reached out...to something. He wanted nothing more than to forget....forget....forget. A chime resounded and began to ring...it got louder and louder. The wall to the room began to glow and Vien had awoken from his slumber and looked at it. The artiface began to phase out of the wall, emanating an etheral blue light. He reached out, touched it. A blue but silent shockwave rippled throughout the entire facility, wiping all computers of anything related to Vien. A second shockwave disabled security locks. Vien's door opened, he was free to go. Vien made his escape and fought past all the confused humans and guards. He found his stash of weapons and took them with him. He stole one of the human vehicles and exited the facility. Just then, another wave rippled through the station and wiped out all biological memory of Vien and anything related to him from the humans. When it struck him, he had forgotten about his son, he had forgotten about the fate of the universe. He wondered for years, wearing his holosuit disguise, as something told him he should remain hidden. Vien had been tracked down by another sanghieli in disguise who told him to call her Jane. She tried to get into a relationship with him, but he was never interested, much to her anger. Eventually, he encountered Maluki and they both fell in love. Maluki's origins were always a mystery, but he had made Vien happier than he had every been. But now, Vien knew the truth of the fate of his universe, he remembered his loss. But now, Kiala was with him, she was alive and he loved her, the mother of his offspring. Still....the memory of his son tore him apart. A fog overtook his vision. "Ahhh, I see." the deep booming voice rang through his head, but it was softer now. "YOU HAVE SUFFERED A TERRIBLE TERRIBLE LOSS. YOUR LOVE FOR YOUR SEEDLING IS TANGIBLE, THE MEMORY OF HIS AURA STILL LINGERS AROUND YOURS! HE SHALL ALWAYS BE BONDED WITH YOU, EVEN IN DEATH. BUT WAIT.....I AM DETECTING AN IDENTICLE AURA....IN THIS WORLD. YOUR SON....YES, HE IS ALIVE!" Vien's hearts jumped for joy. He immediately called out "WHERE?! WHERE IS VALUKEN!?" "HE IS ON THIS EARTH AND HE IS LOOKING FOR YOU. HE HAS KNOW IDEA WHO YOU ARE, BUT HE LOVES YOU. YOU WILL SEE HIM SOON...BUT BE WARNED, YOU HAVE MET HIM BEFORE...BUT YOU DID NOT RECOGNIZE HIM, NOR HE YOU. HE HAS BEEN CHANGED BY THE BANE! HE NO LONGER SHARES YOUR IMAGE. I SHALL SHOW YOU HIM, BUT BE WARNED, YOU MAY FEEL MORE DESPAIR AFTER SEEING THE TRUTH OF YOUR SON'S FATE!" Vien said "I do not care...I want to see my son. Show me him, it's been too long." "AS YOU WISH...." the high mind said. The fog cleared, it revealed a world of porches and destruction. A figure was flying through the air, tentacles burst up from the ground and tried to snatch it. But the flying figure did a few barrel rolls and shot pink light out of his tail tip, slicing right through the tentacles. Vien gasped and sank to his knees in shame. He recognized that slender blue body, that flamboyant green mane, those large majestic wings. It was none other than his husband, his new mate for life, Maluki. (to be continued) Next time: Verbatim remembers his childhood.
