Fair enough, but it's safe to say that those other people do actually care about their genitals. And the fact that they can't actually protect their own bodily autonomy during the first years of their lives is why it's important that someone else gets involved to make sure they have the opportunity to decide what happens to their genitals themselves.

Then that's great for those people, but it's not a reason not to take action. Just because some don't end up objecting to having had parts of their penis cut off when they were an infant does not mean all will. Besides, that's a pretty void argument in the first place. "As long as no one ends up complaining about the pain and unnecessary removal of a significant part of their penis, it's very much okay to keep doing so. It happened to me and I don't remember the pain or care that much so I don't see why we shouldn't do it to others too". Same exact reasoning could be applied to the routine removal of babies' earlobes and (male) infants' nipples. Just because you end up not caring that you go through life missing a part of your genitals, your nipples and earlobes because "someone forced it on me when I was a baby, but hey, it's easy to clean, I happen to like the way not having nipples looks and I don't even remember the pain!" does not mean it should be socially acceptable or okay for everyone else.

  • Wait, when was removing nipples ever a thing?

Never, as far as I'm aware. I just brought it up as a relevant comparison. If it's acceptable and legal to cut off a part of your child's genitals for no justifiable reason whatsoever, then why can't we do the same for other body parts your son can do without? A ridiculous, outdated and damaging stigma is the only thing that makes telling the nurse you want your infant circumcised perfectly fine, but asking if he could also have his nipples removed because you think it's more aesthetically pleasing, less troublesome to clean and reduces the risk of ever contracting breast cancer will probably end up in you being considered a dangerous psycho and having child protective services called to take your child away.

  • Hold in there a second... So because we don't actually miss it or really care about it, we should still ban it?

  • Who is we? The only people saying they don't care or don't miss it are those who have already had it done to them.

  • Then doesn't that mean it's fine if the people are affected don't actually care?

  • Yes, but not everyone who has had it done to them doesn't care. In fact, there are people in this very topic who are unhappy that it was done to them.

Slippery slope. You don't have a lot of autonomy as a child in the first place.

Yes, that is exactly my point. Children have limited autonomy, which is why the government has to get involved to some degree to protect their interests when they can't. Most things should naturally be left to the parents, but some things obviously should not. Regardless of your age, you still are a human being and not your parents' property that they can fiddle with and cut away at how they see fit. And now it seems that Denmark might decide that having an unnecessary surgery done on your child's genitals is not something the parents should be allowed to do, which is something I fully agree with.
