I thought the whole Snowden thing was old news? Or was that a different scandal?

Snowden got the snowball (no pun intended) rolling. There's still investigations going on and new things being discovered.

Yeah, I heard his name pop up like a month or two ago, I thought. Eh, I am generally against whistle-blowers, but from what I know, he may have done the right thing.

Personal negative connotations with the phrase. The whistleblowers themselves are often just people bailing ship because they know something bad is about to happen and just want to "distance" themselves from the explosion by being the ones holding the detonator.
