TL;DR
However, I think English should be mandatory, IF the course content is changed.
I think time spent analysing old text and poetry is time wasted. English lessons should be spent gaining real life skills, such as 'What does this letter from HMRC actually mean?' or 'You are resigning from your current post at work, write a letter to you boss about your resignation.'
