Why don't US schools have Uniforms?

Is there a particular reason or is it just a cultural thing? It always seems strange to see people not wearing blazers, shirts and ties in a high school ._.

        • American students couldn't them when public school was instituted, so only rich kids in private school could afford uniforms on top of a regular wardrobe. By the time everyone could afford them, American students had more social power than they used to, and they argued against it in public outcry.

        • I went to a Catholic grade school and am currently in a public high school. I never minded wearing uniforms. It kind of sickens me to see what kids these days deem good enough to wear to school.

        • I don't know, probably something to do with the Constitution or something. I'm totally for it, however. I bet it would cut down on the very real issue of bullying, for one thing.

        • It is easier to let students wear what they want. I see no good reason for uniforms in school.

        • Public schools cant enforce something like that due to the constitution. Some have restrictions on what you can wear, regarding sayings or gang colors. But private schools do, several i went to had either uniforms or a dress code.

Some do, but most do not. Privates schools 99% of the time require a uniform. Mine does, just saying.

          • Because outside of a private school, that would be a potential economic gate on education, lest you want tax payers buying and maintaining uniforms for people. Also, being free of uniforms allows students to express themselves more through what they choose to wear. I would think someone with "Psychologist" in their handle would be all for that.

            • A lot of US schools have uniforms. Also to everyone saying "freedom, murrica!", you don't have many rights as a student when you go to a public school...so...you basically have to follow the mandated school code of conduct and that has your rights in it.

            • I was once in the NJROTC. so wearing the outfit when i was at school was more then enough dressy for me. I can't see myself wearing a blazer, suit and tie plus the outfit. .-.

            • Because expression and individualism. Uniforms basically undo all of that social reform that wanted to emphasize these two things.

            • I don't know. I can't imagine myself in a uniform, it seems extremely annoying and restrictive. I like to wear bright colors n' shit.

            • No idea, only private and religious schools do. I was fine with that seeing my outfit was nice, expensive, and well fitting.

              • They just don't? I think uniforms are a good idea, they help separate school/home better, and they make it easier in the mornings. Wearing a shirt and tie isn't exactly a big deal. When I did have to wear uniform, I never considered it a big deal. I never thought 'I wish we didn't have to wear uniform.'
