I'd have to agree. I had heard that Spartan-IVs were volunteers, not even abducted when they were children like the Spartan-IIs. And I didn't know that they weren't receiving augmentations. If this is the case, it's practically heresy to even call them Spartans. They have neither the mental nor the physical capacities of their predecessors.

 •
not even abducted when they were children
You say that like getting kidnapped is some kind of advantage.
If this is the case, it's practically heresy to even call them Spartans.
lolwut
They have neither the mental nor the physical capacities of their predecessors.
They were already trained, disciplined marines and ODSTs, the latter being the next best thing to superhuman already. After their augmentations and armor, the IVs are just as effective as the older, prototype Spartans.

 •
You say that like getting kidnapped is some kind of advantage.
To some degree, it was. It allowed the Spartan-IIs to train for combat since they were children. And the deprivation of family and friends would make them more self-reliant and tougher mentally, providing it didn't break them.
If this is the case, it's practically heresy to even call them Spartans.
Meaning Spartan-IVs are only Spartans in name, not in training or ability.
They were already trained, disciplined marines and ODSTs, the latter being the next best thing to superhuman already. After their augmentations and armor, the IVs are just as effective as the older, prototype Spartans.
Even so, Spartan-IVs still don't train from childhood. And regarding their mental and physical capacities, I meant that in terms of basic abilities. If you had a Spartan-II and a Spartan-IV both stripped of their armor, the Spartan-II would be able to out-fight and out-last the Spartan-IV due to superior training and augmentation. As a final thought, think of the Spartan-IV squads you team up with in Halo 4's campaign. They die so easy, don't they? They're slightly better than ODSTs. That told me all I needed to know about what quality Spartans they are.

Eight years total. "Training from childhood" is a lot less impressive than it sounds. And that last bit about them fighting without their armor is irrelevant, because neither the IIs nor the IVs fight without their armor. They aren't that effective so you can have all the fun and get all the kills.

 • They receive augmentation, enough to use the armour and have other environmental advantages over the normal human however you are correct in saying they weren't trained from young age. The early start to the training being the whole reason the true classes of Spartan were called Spartans after the ancient warriors of Greece.

 •
the true classes of Spartan
None of them are "true Spartans". None of them were born and raised in Sparta.

 • However Halsey named them due to there similarities to the true Spartans, the new super troopers do not share these similarities and such should not be called Spartans. There is no denying that they're super soldiers but just because they have fancy augmentation and armour, it doesn't make them Spartans.

 • The UNSC's supersoldier program as a whole is called "Spartan". That is, every project under the blanket of "supersoldier" is part of the Spartan program, and thus every supersoldier they create is a Spartan. The Spartan-IVs are part of the Spartan program, hence why they're called Spartan-IVs.
