NRA President calls for better gun background check system

So I was actually quite surprised reading this, but it turns out that the president of the NRA does want background checks to take mental illness into account.
"The outrage ought to be placed on an unprotected naval base, on a criminal justice system ... that doesn't even enforce the federal gun laws when we could dramatically cut violence, on a mental health system that is completely broken, on a check system that is a complete joke in terms of stopping the bad guys.
So why didn't I hear about this on liberal news sites? You'd think they'd want people to know that the NRA is willing to pass some gun laws... (to be clear, MSNBC did have an article on it, but they focused on the part where he says that armed guards should have been at the base, since it's a government facility) Thoughts?

  • This isn't new news. We've known for quite some time that a good majority of the NRA support better background checks.

Why are you surprised? As a gun owner and someone who believes in gun ownership, I agree with this and I'm sure many of the other gun owners would agree as well. It's only the people who continue to blame the firearm itself that are morons. For whatever reason, they fail to comprehend that a gun does not kill anyone, it's people that kill other people and the mass shootings are all caused by people with mental illness. Every single person that caused a mass shooting all were flagged by the police, friends, family or people the shooter worked with, or have records of mental illness in the past. It's the fault of the liberal mainstream media that has been successfully brainwashing people with garbage info, claiming that guns are the problem and in no way is it a person making his/her own decision.

      • most people didn't read the actual text of the proposed legislation known as the 2013 assault weapons ban and thus cried about it's not passing, not caring or realizing it was an absolutely horrible proposal. the problem is that it's a very slippery slope on what defines someone as too crazy under such laws? what about the mass over-diagnoses of modern, lazy psychologists who basically act as pill-whores? what used to be just a hyperactive kid is now ADHD and must take pills for being natural instead of just less sugar in the diet and more attention from lazy parents(you know, same ones think it's OK to use a leash like a kid is a dog). a non-violent person who had been diagnosed with ADD(or even anything else minor) was considered the same as a hardened criminal under that POS legislation. that would have automatic disqualification overnight for Millions of Americans since it's at least 25% of all high school aged males. 1/5th of all Americans are currently prescribed medication for light to moderate depression, and everyone goes through some level of depression at least one point in their lives(family members/loved ones die, etc.). plus doctor patient confidentiality, etc. it's actually a very complex issue that requires a vast improvement of the healthcare system and societal responsibility over alll to even be considered a viable option.

      • The NRA were never the 'monsters' the Liberal media made them out to be. Overall they're people of principle and they're people who know their facts. There's the odd couple of nutcases but the Liberal media used them to generalise the whole organisation. The Liberals just want to support the disarming of the population and the government becoming more powerful over the people, which is ironic considering the name 'liberal.' They are simply authoritarian goons. They're not all bad people, most of them are just naive and misguided.

      • Sure, he'll give lip service to it. Let one legislator try to add his suggestion in, and they'll feel the whole weight of the NRA land on them like the hand of god.

        • After Sandy Hook, Wayne La Pierre went on almost every single news show to call for more mental health info sharing and making mental health a priority. He was widely dismissed by the liberals and it doesn't surprise me that you never heard about it. Mental illness isn't the answer the liberal media is looking for. They are focused on the gun. They want to ban guns and declare certain guns more evil and dangerous than others. That's why this latest Navy Yard shooting is so telling. The mainstream media instantly reported that an AR 15 was used. They ran story after story about the AR 15. And then we all learned that they were wrong and a shotgun was used. The liberals basically stopped reporting on it despite all the evidence backing up the NRA's positions including the fact that the base had terrible security, the man's mental illness records were kept secret, and that the Navy Yard is essentially a gun free zone despite the fact that we trained these people to use guns safely. So when the shit hit the storm, what did the Navy Yard employees do? The cowered like sheep and waited for other people with guns to show up and save them.

It's funny because arguably, the NRA has been fighting measures to better the background check system. I keep bringing up the fact that after the Assassination attempt on Regan, the Brady Hand Gun Bill was introduced and largely passed into law. The problem is that there was a specific part of it that required states to submit felony and mental health records to the background check system. The NRA lobbied against that and it was subsequently thrown out by the Supreme Court. The ATF hasn't had a permanent department head since 2006 thanks to the NRA and allies. The Tiahart Ammendment does not let the ATF require inventory checks to detect lost or stolen guns, they can't use the trace data to find and shut down shady gun dealers.

            • Of course they want mental health issues to be a factor in background checks. The issue they have with "universal background checks" is that it eliminates the basic liberty of private sales between private citizens.

              • I lost a lot of respect for the NRA over the years, especially when that dick head president of theirs called the gaming industry "A corrupt shadow industry" and tried to blame it for Sandy Hook. Most likely this is pure PR.

                  • Why would this be a surprise? Let me guess, you think anyone in the NRA is a bad person that doesn't care about gun control and the safety of the general public.

                  • To bad the NRA never said they are against this. But I guess most people think they are because people make them out to be the bad guys.

                    • Let's hope mental illness is very specific and not broad view.. if you are just depressed on occasion, that shouldn't disqualify you from owning a fire arm. It has to be specific.. because everyone goes through a bad moment, bad day or a bad month.. but that shouldn't make them be labeled as mentally unstable.

                      • Of course they do. Gun possession with no checks or restrictions of any kind is madness.

                        • I don't think anyone really has an issue with better background checks. As long as it isn't restricting a good persons ability to own a gun, I have no issue with it.
