So [not my own choosing] I was exposed to Trigun a few days ago. I'm not a huge fan of anime, since I find a lot of it childish. However, I noticed that Vash (the main character of Trigun) might be a inspiration for the Warlock in Destiny.
Vash fits the following description:
Swirling trenchcoat.
Hand-Cannon.
Borderline supernatural speed/senses.
Mild sci-fi 'wild west' environment.
Protector of the weak.
What is a Warlock?
A person with a helmet and a trenchcoat.
Hand-Cannon.
Magic.
Destiny is the wild west (watch the GDC interview).
Basically a do-gooder.
Compare the intensity/design scheme (obviously the Warlock is meant for space, Vash is meant for a desert)

Note that Trigun was made in 1998, and Bungie made an anime game a couple of years later (Oni) so it's not to far-fetched to think they would pull inspiration from Trigun for Destiny (as they already have with the Matrix)
So do you think the Warlock concept might have been inspired (in part) by Vash?

All of the bolded could be found in Westerns made long before Trigun. I'm not saying that Destiny didn't pull from that anime (because none of us know for sure) but it's much more likely that a small part of Destiny may have been influenced by old westerns.

Hahaha anime

It's just as likely that Halo 4's Mantis was inspired specifically by Metal Arm's Titan or the Goliath from Starcraft. It's just a general theme. There are bipedal mechs. People like to put guns on mech's arms because it looks neat. Everyone likes firing rockets at stuff. These are just common things with mechs. Sure they could have influenced each other, but I doubt in any of these cases one designer looked at one of the other mechs and said "THAT ONE!". Now if Bungie gave us the option to give our Warlock an identical hair style as well as glasses, then I might get a little suspicious. However none of the attributes you listed are terribly specific, so I'd say it's probably just the case I described above.

Now, how can I make a Desert Punk character...

Edited by SquattingTurtle: 8/26/2013 6:37:04 PMWell i certainly thought about that a while ago as well! A man on the frontier wearing a red coat using a hand cannon. That's the look im actually going for in destiny so its funny that you made this thread. I can really relate. I also made a thread not too long ago relating to vash. Now hopefully i can get a helmet with a mohawk

Well, I suppose that helps add solidarity to my choice of being a Warlock.. Vash, for being a character in an anime I have watched off and on, has always been a favorite of mine. His persona is one that I enjoy. That's awesome.. I wonder how many will run around with "Vash-coats" when Destiny begins... Even more, I wonder if Bungie will pop in a few 'Trigun-inspired' relics, gear, and guns?
-
I'm sure Bungie got inspiration from all kinds of places so i wouldn't be surprised if vash had anything to do with the look of the warlock....Titans FTW! :-P
-
OP, if you haven't seen it and you have an hour to kill, you should watch Bungie's Destiny GDC panel. It talks about visual and conceptual inspiration.
-
No. I know that anime, but really, the only major connection I can see that matches confirmed tropes of the warlock is a duster and a gun.
-
Trenchcoat with specifc design = Vash. -OP logic.
-
Yeeahhhhhh, I see it too. Fair enough.
-
At the most he may have been taken as design inspiration but since Destiny doesn't seem very anime oriented I doubt he was used for warlock design. Besides, there are A LOT more famous trench coat people besides vash such as Rorschach from the watchmen. On top of that I think they wanted to go with a "what would a futuristic wizard look like" approach and just saw that coat as the best option.

well it is certainly a possibility. Why wouldnt they? Anime has many good stories and plot twisters among its many shows. Wouldnt surprise me in the least if Bungie said that they drew some inspiration from a show or two. They did the same thing with other movie series such as Star Wars and such.

Anyone? :/
