XB1 vs PS4 Specs - In-depth Information

So, I've seen many conversations arguing back and forth about "which console will feature better graphics / FPS". I would like to clarify the specs information beyond what is blatantly obvious. Note: I will attempt to remain as unbiased as possible. Xbox One Features 32MB ESRAM - This is important for "Texture Memory" and "Tiled Resources" DirectX11.2 - Tiled Resources and memory allocation. For further explanation, feel free to ask 8GB of DDR3 RAM but only 5GB will be used for games - Slower than GDDR5 but lower latency Practically identical CPU to PS4 1.2 theoretical Teraflops GPU (Not set-in-stone, Microsoft has talked about increasing the clock speed) 500GB Hard-Drive A separate system/OS that processes Audio, which means less stress on the XB1 during gaming Rumored that MS will increase the RAM to 12GB of DDR3 with 9 of it dedicated to games. (This means more graphics memory available for high definition textures, but not necessarily operate faster.) PS4 Features 8GB of GDDR5 RAM - Faster than DDR3 but higher latency (Note: No GPU in existence features 8GB of GDDR5 - the GTX Titan comes close at 6GB - granted the Titan offers much better performance over-all.) Practically identical CPU to XB1 1.84 theoretical Teraflops GPU SOLID-STATE-DRIVE(Unlikely because of cost, but still a possibility) (thanks to sleepr for the next 3 points) OpenGL (Has a plugin similar to Tiled Resources, but not complete and not all devices support it) Dedicated Audio Processing Chip Developers have already claimed that the PS4 SDK is easier to work with. For PC Nerds like myself: XB1 - Radeon 7790 http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+7790&id=2502 PS4 - Radeon 7870 http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+7870&id=324 So to sum it up XB1 has more tools and a variety of different technology behind it. PS4 has more raw power and (if rumors are true) will have incredibly fast load speeds - AND is easier for Developers to use. My personal opinion: Don't pre-order either of the consoles (unless you are REALLY dedicated to them). Wait until you see REAL examples of the consoles' power being compared. If I had to make a guess based on this information - the PS4 will have better graphics because of it's ability to process much faster - ESPECIALLY if the solid state drive rumor is true - and ease of use for developers. That being said, I am still going to hold my breath until we see real examples. EDIT: What is Tiled Resources? DirectX11.2 introduces new technology called Tiled Resources - essentially, what Tiled Resources does is it increases and decreases graphics fidelity based on location and what the player is actively viewing. To simplify - imagine your house rendered as a video game. The room that you are in and rooms that are visible to you are rendered as usual, but as you approach something, it maintains the same quality because its render quality has been increased, whereas the objects you are moving away from, and the room you no longer occupy, have had their render quality decreased. It's like an automatic light dimmer, for video games. OpenGL has a very similar (yet not complete) plugin. EDIT 3.0: The reason I originally posted this in Destiny is because there are a LOT of "Which console, xb1 vs ps4, which will have better graphics, which will you play destiny on, etc" kinds of threads. I figured the Destiny board would appreciate some more knowledge - and I was right> I posted this on #gaming too and didn't get the same responses. Actually - #gaming was openly hostile to my post earlier. EDIT 4.0: 50% more TFlops does not necessarily mean that the PS4 will have 50% more graphics ability - didn't mean for it to come across that way, but TFlops are literally a measurement of the processing power, and 1.84 is approximately 150% of 1.2. Also - in response to SSD - it is feasible that a large company like Sony would be capable of working out a deal with SSD manufacturers - and cost effectiveness is not as big of an issue with consoles because they also generate a lot of cash from accessories, video game sales, subscriptions, etc. Plus - the XB1 Kinect cost Microsoft a huge amount of money - this is why Sony was able to spend more money on the PS4's hardware. There is still plenty of time until release, so changes to the consoles ARE possible. I also removed Edit 2.0 to remove bias, thanks for the feedback.

    • That's a good write up as far as pure spec comparison goes... Just my 2 cents, I bought both the ps3 and 360 back in the day because they both offered something the other didn't...ps3 superior gameplay/graphics and 360 superior online play. I will be getting the ps4 first, just like I got ps2 and ps3 first when they came out. Any opinions on how improved the ps4 online play is? How does Destiny feel on the new controller as well as other FPS games? I personally prefer my 360 controller for shooters, and my ps3 for rpgs and the like...

    • The simple thing is: Xbox one runs like a piece of shit, is awkward to navigate, and imo the exclusives are a bit meh (halo remastered? Already have them all on the original consoles, and halo has been in ow decline ever since 3). The ps4 runs beautifully, easy to navigate, has some good exclusives.

    • its funny how PS4 players get a remastered game with nothing changed for 50$, but Xbox players get 4 games remastered(halo 2, halo3, halo CE, halo 4) plus beta access to halo 5 and the whole halo movie at 1080p 60FPS for 60$ lol. Microsoft>Playstation

        • Great post! Good info. But I notice a lot of people saying "well PS4 won't have as good as games as Xbone" Idk about that. From my experience and knowledge, I remember playstation for having the better exclusives and xbox having more exclusives. PS had quality and Xbox had Quantity. I mean honestly. And before people jump down my throat with "WHAT ABOUT HALO AND GEARS" yea yea those were good games but in general I just feel playstation made better games. In the past and still today. Crash bandicoot, Spyro, Sly Cooper, The Uncharted Series, I mean just The Last of Us slaps the competition. This is just my humble 2 cents

        • wat. it's like 4 to 6 grand and requires water cooling but you can get a 12GB Vram GPU if you're scrooge mcduckmcmoneybags the 4th.

        • I know the PS4 will have more raw power on console, but I'm a long time xbox player and most of my good friends are getting the box, I don't really care to split hairs over the issue, they're both great systems that will have great games. You kinda also left out the back-end cloud rendering xbone will have, that could be a fairly powerful resource. "the utility of a powerful cloud computer with regard to in-game lighting where “things often involve some complicated up-front calculations when you enter that world, but they don’t necessarily have to be updated every frame”. Also physics modelling, fluid dynamics, and cloth motion can be handled by the cloud without adding lag to gameplay. Booty suggested that the power available in the cloud to a single Xbox One user would be equivalent to about three Xbox One consoles working together. Developers will have to decide for themselves in how to manage what is being offloaded to the cloud"

          • Im going to get a pc instead 😏! Get a ps4 or xbone when the slim versions of them are released in the future and theres a wider selection of games. Destiny comes out on 360 and thats all i care about + they said the game experience for destiny on 360 and next gen are pretty much the same

          • For me it's all about the games (and sadly the price). To me it was halo + titan fall vs planet side 2+ Black light retribution+ last of us sequels. I found these to be even for a while but then I found out TitanFall was coming to 360 and so I figured I can get it for 360 and save a lot of money.

          • better hardware, graphics and games, cheaper, less bulk, manufacturer not arrogant, features not forced and shoved down your throats, devs like it so probably in the future the console will get more game exclusive deals than its counterpart. so why again should we get xboner?

            • I've been very curious as to what all the major differences are. Friends on my friend list have been switching to PS4 because "there friends are going to PS4." I can't find the original reason why my friends, who have always had xbox, are going to the PS4...

Please switch this to #gaming. And btw you missed a few things: 1) PS4 also comes with a hardware chip to process audio; http://www.gamechup.com/mark-cerny-ps4-contains-a-dedicated-audio-processing-chip/ 2) PS4 uses OpenGL, which also features tiled resources by using an extention (different name). http://www.opengl.org/discussion_boards/showthread.php/182105-Tiled-Resources-like-a-better-version-of-tiled-resources-in-DirectX-11-2
There is already an extension for that, which is even more powerful than DX11.2 tiled resources (see AMD_sparse_texture), in fact, pretty much this time DX "borrowed" from GL, like they did with most of their DX11.1 features.
Everything in the Software side can be reproduced on PS4, not really seeing the software advantage for Xbox here like you say. Not to mention that according to some devs the PS4 SDK tools are better at the moment (sorry can't find a link, you'll have to trust me on this one, I saw it on twitter a few weeks ago). And btw I do not believe the PS4 comes with a SSD since it's a 500GB hard drive it would be too expensive, but it will allow you to switch the drive and hopefully this time it will take full advantage of the technology.
