Why you shouldn't have an emotional response to stimuli
This doesn't really seem possible.
English
-
Easy. It's called stoicism and it's very useful.
-
It's like a disease.
-
How so? It allows one to make the best decisions if emotion is removed from the equation.

-
Of course not. Mainly because they suck right now at decision-making.

Edited by Y SO REACH BETA: 7/21/2013 8:28:01 AMYou do realize that isn't possible right? You're supposed to feel those emotions. For all the genius of those philosophers they couldn't understand that it doesn't matter how you feel, just how you handle it. You feel sad when a loved one dies because you loved them and a bond has been stolen from you. You can't control your automatic thoughts and your emotions, the only thing you can do is respond to them. When you're angry you can calm yourself through physiological methods such as deep breathing and you can focus on something relaxing. You can't stop ever feeling angry again. It's a biological response that you don't have control over. It's like suggesting you stop mitosis.

that doesnt sound good . Im sure youve seen terminator
-
Yeah. What about it?
-
then you know what happens when we dont use emotion in judgement
-
We make better decisions?
-
sometimes and sometimes the machines do better it varies
-
Excluding emotion allows one to act in the most utilitarian manner possible, providing the best result for everyone.
-
Well, simply put, you're wrong. Except, of course, your definition of "best" varies from mine.
-
I'm using Bentham's definition of best.
-
When did he die?
-
1832, but I don't see how that's relevant, considering his definition of "best" is basically arithmetic.
-
His definition of "best" lacks the inclusion of human feelings. To me, that makes it irrelevant. But whatever.
-
"Best" is to cause the most pleasure while avoiding the most pain. Emotions are encompassed in that.
-
Interesting.
-
You can never fully exclude emotions. You can try to make the most logical choice available to you but that doesn't mean emotions aren't involved.
-
You might not be able to fully exclude, but you can get really really close to it.

Edited by Uncle Putin: 7/21/2013 2:43:25 AMWell hold your horses there for a second. I agree that emotions can often times hinder better judgement, but emotions can also save lives given the right scenario.
