Don't worry, it pisses the military off as well because it's a movie glamorizing one of the biggest -blam!- ups ever in military history.

  • That's true for a lot of the modern day war films. A buddy of mine said they had a showing of Hurt Locker for the entire Battalion, and every single member walked out of the movie not 20 minutes into it because it represented the War on Terror so insultingly bad. It's hard to make a movie based off of something that you have no experience with, and it doesn't sell as well if there isn't constant action. They almost always want things to seem a little more explosive and simple than they really are on the battlefield. The closest a person will ever get to a battlefield without actually joining in is a book, and that only covers the mental side of things, neglecting the physical strains. I can imagine that one day films will be able to portray these sorts of things more appropriately, but for now, they will try to sell whatever has the most action available.

  • For the most part, I agree with this. The only thing, though, is that I think shows like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers did a great job of portraying the mental, emotional, and physical strains that comes in war.

  • And that's honestly a good point. I think it will always be easier to write about war retrospectively. I like to believe that humanity will be able to avoid "repeating history" through the mediums of fiction. Movies, TV shows and books will act as reminders of what horrible things have happened in the past, and this fact makes it easier to write about a war after it has happened and settled. Current wars though, are filled with the mistakes of mankind. It's hard to write about a current war because no two people can agree on everything about the war (for the most part). It is hard to write about a current war because these wars have not yet taught mankind anything quite yet. Only that we have made a mistake somewhere along the way to this point.

  • What are talking about? Why did you feel the need to write all that mumbo jumbo? A simple one or two sentences would have sufficed.

  • ? Are you seriously holding a gruge still? I thought we could be friends dude? You're a neat guy, and a majority of your posts I actually agree with all the time. There was no point in posting what I had to say twice just because it had little to do with this subtopic, and I covered what I had to say about your post at the start of mine.
