TL;DR - Bungie created a game called Pathways into Darkness and I believe the recent ViDoc "Pathways Out Of Darkness" tells of plot points that may correlate to the story line in their previous game.
I was doing a little browsing (Bungie related, of course) and stumbled onto an interesting piece of Bungie info that I did not previously know.
In 1993, Bungie Software Products Corporation (Jason Jones and Alex Seropian) release a game called Pathways into Darkness . It was a FPS for the Macintosh computer, and was the first successful game they landed. It allowed them to start their studio in Chicago and actually receive payment to make video games for the future. On the Wiki site, it gives a brief plot overview:
Pathways casts the player as a member of a US Army Special Forces team sent on a mission to the Yucatán Peninsula. Days before, a diplomat from the alien Jjaro appeared to the President of the United States and informed him that in days, an ancient godlike being sleeping beneath a pyramid would awaken and destroy the Earth. The only way to prevent this catastrophe is to prevent the god from awakening. The eight-man Special Forces team carries a nuclear weapon, with the goal of entering the ancient pyramid, descending to the bottom level where the god sleeps, and activating the bomb to stun the god and bury it under tons of rock.
Now what is interesting to me is that there are slight connections to Bungie's recent ViDoc release titled "Pathways Out Of Darkness". The narrator of the ViDoc says:
The stories tell of a Golden Age long ago, when our civilization spanned the system. It was a bright and hopeful time, but it didn't last...Something hit us, knocked us down and tried to stamp us out. No one knows exactly what, but we do know this: very few of us survived and those that did owe their life to the Traveler.
So we have Pathways into Darkness, where man descended into the Earth to kill/disrupt an ancient godlike Being and stop them from destroying mankind. Then we have "Pathways Out Of Darkness", a story about mankind's rise from the ashes after "something" tried to obliterate us from the face of the Earth.
I never played Pathways but the endgame shows that we succeed in burying the godlike Being under the earth. What is hundreds of years later, this Being awakens again and finishes the job it intended, only to be interrupted by the Traveler, our Savior.
I'm sure there are more connections to this, and if there are we will most likely learn them as we get more and more information about Destiny in the coming months. If you have played this game or have any more ideas concerning this theory, please like the thread or comment below. Thanks for sticking around to read!

We were also told "See You Starside" which is what the soldiers say in Marathon when they beam out. So there are lots of references being dropped. There may be some link but it's more likely Bungie is saying that they are proud of their heritage and their DESTINY. :)

Hallway heading towards the speaker is a picture of a triangle inside of a circle, could that be your pyramid?
-
It's about time somebody brought this up. I'm not sure how much we can truly take from it though.
-
it all sounds very interesting though to me the reference refers to bringing there ideas and vision out into the world for all of us to see what they have created. but bungie does enjoy toying with us all so i wouldn't be to surprised if there is a trick or two up there sleeve.

Interesting theory, although I think 'Pathways out of Darkness' was just a reference to Bungie being dark for so long and that was the moment that broke it, the video was their pathway out of the dark. I think the reference to the past game was just a nod towards the more hardcore bungie fans.

If underneath "the city" that is underneath The Traveler is an underground inverted pyramid that contains a sleeping god (with an unpronounceable name)? I call dibs on the yellow crystal!
-
What if it is inside of the Traveler?
-
Also, remember the Forward Unto Dawn in Halo? Forward Unto Dawn Pathways Into Darkness See the similarity between the two? Opposites, more of. I don't know.

I like the thinking. But the one thing that wouldn't make sense is the sentence "Days before, a diplomat from the alien Jjaro appeared to the President of the United States and informed him that in days, an ancient godlike being sleeping beneath a pyramid would awaken and destroy the Earth" From the information gathered, it seems as though humanity had no knowledge of any other intellegent life previous to the events leading up to Destiny.

I doubt the will be in the same universe. It is just a reference to one of their old games. The do this very often. They referenced marathon multiple times in the halo series. There are even naming conventions that are somewhat followed across games. Cortana (Halo) and Durandal (Marathon) are the names of Ai's. They both refer to famous swords in European history. There is a third Joyeuse. I wouldn't be surprised if Bungie used this name for some kind of computer or AI that plays a main role in Destiny.

Cool catch, dude! Interesting post. Mo shit I didn't know! :o lol.

Edited by Nitron F117: 3/22/2013 8:26:21 PMI'm pretty sure Marathon is already the continuation of the Pathways universe. So far, destiny has been touted as Bungie's "new" universe. I don't think we'll see it tie in with any of their other universes directly.

It's a possibility, they do like to make references to things....a lot.
-
While not knowing about the game, I also thought the phrase was referencing the company "going dark" for a while there; and the fans waiting eagerly until the game was finally revealed and the road to their new game began.
-
I'm pretty sure it was just a nod of appreciation to Grizzled Ancient Fans of Bungie, rather than meaning anything in Destiny's plot or game world.
-
i thought it was just a cooler way of saying pathways out of halo

Nostalgia baby,thats why i'm still gamin' :-)

Over the years Bungie has had subtle or not so subtle references to previous games (the Mjolnir armor masterchief wore was a reference to the Mjolnir cyborgs from marathon, for example) so I would not be shocked if there were some references to Pathways in Destiny, but I seriously doubt there will be enough there to link the games stories together.

I thought Marathon was the continuation of Pathways' story? Either way, the name of the ViDoc was probably just a little callback to their old game.

Not sure if you're right, but sweet find nonetheless!
