Customization in Destiny (Speculation)

NOTE: This post is purely speculation. Any comments I make on armour, weapons, classes, items, loot, locations, or mechanics are not actual fact, and will more than likely not be what Bungie decides to include in the final game. So don't be going and getting your panties in a bundle about something I said. WARNING: This post is VERY long. Read at your own peril. Destiny. So far, we have been fed a morsel of the cake to come (just be lucky GLaDOS doesn't work at Bungie, or else instead of cake we'd all be on 'Test' duty). Some may say it's a bit too soon to worry about what's going to be in the game, but I say "hogwash"! I've been speculating about this game as soon as Bungie left Halo. So, lets jump right in. Armour/Clothing (Aesthetic): We're all familiar with Halo's Permutations that were implemented in H3. I personally love the fact that you can customize the appearance of the avatar you control on the battlefield, to make yourself stand out (although in certain situations that might not be a good thing). Permutations were popular, people clamored for more armour options in Reach, and clamored for even more in Halo 4. So, Bungie being Bungie, I highly doubt this demand for customization will go unheeded. We have a total of 3 confirmed classes (Hunter, Warlock and Titan) and 1 possible class (Vanguard). I can imagine Bungie squeezing maybe 1 or 2 more in there, but I feel we have ourselves a sold base to work from. So, let's just work with the confirmed classes, keep things simple. First the Hunter. Every image in which we see this class, the model always has a hooded cape fitted over their armour. Here's our first point of possible customization. Colour, length, material, insignia, hood size, hood shape, all of these, while maybe not all are significant (hood size and shape), these are all possible customization factors. Colour and insignia could be the most useful, as they could be used to identify clans. Hunters also don't seem to have solid body armour, rather it looks to be flexible, like leather. This could have colour, emblems, light patterns and colour, and maybe even some animations depending on what the armour's purpose, backgound and function was. Next, the Warlock. This class wears a sort of frock, or long tailed coat. Warlocks also seem to wear more cloth, or maybe just less body armour, than either the Hunters or Titans (which would make sense if Warlocks are meant to be a "Mage" type class). The frock could conceivably have all the same customizations as the Hunter. The Warlock seems to have limited armour, mainly gauntlets and boots with a single pauldron to keep the frock together, and so these pieces would follow the same customization as the Titan's equivalent parts. However, the one thing that has been pointed out with the Class art strip that Bungie released is that the Warlock seems to have a sort of miniature drone hovering close-by. If these "Drone Buddies" are in the game, unique to the Warlock or not, there are many things about this little drone we can speculate about, but right now, lets think aesthetic, and we'll talk about function later. We could customize it by colour, size, shape, maybe the noise it makes as it maintains it's hover, light colour, patterns, add-ons (which could also provide functionality as well) and possibly the particle type, shape, duration and colour of the drones "exhaust" as it flies. Finally, the Titan. Basically, as far as aesthetics go, this is Destiny's version of a Spartan, and as such, we basically have all the options open to us as was in the Halo franchise: Helmet, Bracers, Gauntlets, Boots, Chest (and if we REALLY wanted to get freaky, we could split all these into left, right, front and/or back. But that's possibly going a bit overboard). Basically, it's just a Destiny Spartan. Armour/Clothing (Funtion): Now, I don't know if the armour is just for looks or if Bungie is going to imbue the characters outfit with stat boosters/reducers. Lets take a look at how the armour would act if it indeed affected stats: Hunter: Armour provides decent protection against attacks, especially any "Magic" based attacks (replace "Magic" with whatever Bungie is going to call it, like "Traveller Powers" ;b). Hunter armour would probably boot speed, agility or dexterity, as Hunter's are shaping up to be the Scout's of Destiny. The cloak could also have a passive buff/nerf based on it's colour and the palette of the immediate area. Warlock: Not much about the Warlocks outfit lends itself to their well-being when it comes to bullets and physical attacks. However, the Warlocks frock and clothing could be imbued with some of the "Magic" they themselves posses, therefore gaining the ability to absorb, reflect, or dissipate any energy based damage. The Warlocks drone could also be fitted with modules, providing a health trickle, temporarily boosted shields, or even secondary shields that activate after a certain amount of health has been lost. Titan: The Titan's armour is all about strength and endurance. Titans can dish out the pain, and they can take it and then some. Their armour would enhance their melee attacks, allow them to lift heavier loads (maybe even flip a Scorpion or two). When you need something smashed, call in a Titan. Weapons: So far, based on the classes, there can be assumed at the very least three different types of weapons: Rifles (Hunter), Carbines (Warlock), and LMGs (Titans). These weapons could be customizable with skins, different pulse colours for energy weapons, attachments (i.e. laser sight, different scope/sights and reticules) and maybe even a mix n' match feature that allows you to swap over components of different guns (possibly even from different categories) that allow you to have a one of a kind instrument of death. Also, if there are melee weapons, possibly blade type, length and colour, dual-blade, single-blade, handle aesthetics, you get the picture. Armour Modulations: Now I know what you're thinking: "Don't you mean Armour Abilities? Those were so stupid in Reach, why taint Destiny with that crap?" Alright, so just hear me out. Yes, Armour Abilities in Reach were at times idiotic (anyone who used Armour Lock regularly has my undying hatred and spite directed towards them), however, Armour "Abilities" (or Modulations, or just "Mods") could be a very beneficial, even a pivotal mechanic in Destiny, if Bungie did it just right. Mods would have to be balanced, and certain Mods could even be restricted to a certain class to prevent abuse by the other classes (such as a strength Mod allowed for the Titan but not for any other class, to give the Titan a more defined and vital role as "The Pain Train"). These restricted Mods would give each class it's own internal classing system, giving players to not only tailor their macro-playing style, but also tweak their individual playing style, or even adapt to a situation that requires a Hunter who needs to be a bit more quick on their feet instead of a steady marksman. So far, no confirmed stats have been revealed, but speculation and deductive reasoning taken from screens of the most recent ViDoc suggest that there might be at least 4 different stats a class can modify to achieve differing performance within that class. Now, these Armour Modules would, in my opinion, be best bought at market (NPC or a "Grand Exchange") or found as loot (except maybe your first one. That would be given to you after the tutorial). But this raises another, more interesting possibility. What if, instead of like, rare Mods, you instead find rare blueprints for "special" Mods. You must find two or more more generic, but still hard to find Mods, and a few materials, and then either allow the player to craft them, or require them to take them to a Forger or Blacksmith, or whatever they would be called in the future. This offers up a unique community pivot, in that blueprints give players, and even clans, a source of tension and competition. Maybe you can find the blueprint on your own, or maybe you need to bring some "friends". Once you find the blueprint, maybe bribe, threaten or even kill your adventure buddies to secure the blueprint for yourself. However, those players will know you have a rare and valuable blueprint, and you don't have the Mod just yet. You need to find the components you need, and that means that you can have a bounty on your head, or you might run into one of those guys you possibly killed, but he happens to have a couple of his Titan buddies with him. Like I said, this type of implementation, or something similar to it, could really drive player and clan competition as well as community story and lore. I think that wraps things up for now. These are just a few of the ideas that might be in the game, if not the whole idea, maybe I got close (or maybe Bungie read this and thought it one of these ideas was worth implementing, even at this point. *wink wink* :b) At any rate, sound off below and tell me what you think, maybe even give me a three page essay on what you think is going to be in the game, or you'd like to be in the game. And please, keep it civil. Wouldn't want to attract the Forum Ninjas, now would we.

  • Started a new topic: men

  • I think that full customisation as you have described it would really make the game more enjoyable, knowing that the chances of someone looking identical to me are so slim as to be impossible. Another thing along those line that has ALWAYS annoyed me in almost all games is name-tags above every single person's head, whether they be allies or not. The way I see it, there should be NO way of knowing where/who an enemy is because of a name above their head, and having no name for allies adds to the suspense when you come across someone and are trying to remember who they are. Radar is ok, because you still don't know exactly who the little dot is. But back to Destiny, it would be cool if, by default, there were no names above people's heads unless they were your Xbox/PSN friends. But by finding/buying/crafting a certain device (perhaps using the "blueprint" method you stated) you could use it to reveal the names of people you meet. OR have a system where you "talk" to someone and register their ID, and then if you see them again then their name will be displayed. Or maybe just have an option to turn off displaying other people's names for you, but still allowing them to see yours. As for practical armour, I'm not sure about simply having specific "stat gains" for armour, I like the idea of passive "detection" bonuses depending on armour/cloak colour and the colour of the environment( (I've actually thought of it myself) but I think it would be cool if each "set" of armour had certain effects which became less prominent when mixed and matched with pieces from other sets. Just my two cents :D

I have several ideas for customization (which I may post later) but for now I just wanted to mention one caution I have with this concept. While I LOVE the idea of being able to tailor everything to make my character unique, I believe that it needs to be more distinguishable and purposeful than it has been in the past. Example of where customization has failed:
In Halo: Reach, I would spend a good 20 minutes looking at different combinations of shoulder pads and wrist guards to match my new chest piece. Then I would get into the game and find that I never EVER noticed other people's armor unless it was Inclement Weather or something along those lines.
Now what I definitely WOULD have noticed in Reach would have been things like: custom under-body glow when you are riding a Ghost, a special battle cry when I sniped anyone with a headshot, a sweet clan symbol when you hover over my character to show my expert melee skills. These are just simple ideas, but the point is that we need to be able to customize things that people actually notice! Destiny has HUGE potential to do this! If my buddy lands his new ship down beside me, I want to see clan decals, a special insignia that I know he earned by killing 1000 Cabal, and after burners that glow green instead of red just because he felt like spending the cash. I know I'm merely talking about aesthetics rights now, but this is the stuff that makes us stand out. If I hear a siren from a ship in the distance, I know that it will be a rough go of it, and I might very well tuck tail and run. Or if I see a Warlock with a violet cape, I know he has mastered melee combat and will keep my distance from him. I guess my bottom line is that visuals are only effective if that are A) completely distinguishable (even in the heat of battle) and B) useful for fighting by providing tactical information

      • My Weapon customization Speculations I have some good ideas for weapon customization. I think it would be pretty cool if you could COMPLETELY customize your guns. I'm talking about like being able to add skins, scopes/sights, grenade launchers/flamethrowers/shotguns, extended mags, and the like in whatever layout you want. Maybe Bungie will go so far as to let you customize the raw features of the guns, like barrel lengths, caliber, rate of fire, or even ammunition TYPE (think incendiary rounds, maybe a long lasting health sucking dart). Whatever the case, I'm just glad for the weapon customization being in there at all.

        • The class mod idea sounds like Borderlands, which is a good thing. Being able to fine-tune your playstyle on the fly against "trash mobs" and "bosses", or even against environmental hazards, is a great thing and I won't be complaining if Destiny rips off Borderlands in that regard. As for crafting your own mods, or crafting anything? I doubt that will be a feature in Destiny. While it has a lot of hints of RPGs/MMORPGs, Destiny will be primarily an FPS. There will be an emphasis on adventure and killing things. Bungie won't want us to sit around calculating statistics. They'll want us to be able to know at a glance if this weapon is better than the one in our hands to keep the pace, which is something Borderlands sucked at, despite all its good points. Halo and most modern shooters are pretty much point and kill, which is something I imagine Bungie continuing on. No one wants to spend time doing math when they could be exploring ruins and killing aliens. I'm going to guess instead that Bungie will have a variety of "base weapons" with lots of add-ons/mods that will alter the gun's performance. As Bungie releases new chapters, with new worlds to explore and enemies to kill, will be new weapons, armor, mods and other player-usable tech as well. But I personally don't see them using a Borderlands-style "random loot generator" to come up with everything. That doesn't strike me as Bungie's style. But who knows? Only Bungie at this point, which is the fun of speculation. Regardless, I'm excited, it looks like it's going to be a great game.

          • Customization is one of my favorite aspects of video games If there isn't enough, I'll feel like I've been half-assed, or if there isn't any, then I'll just be bored with how I look So I'm hoping all these things and more would be included, for a game, this is a lot to ask for because the engine may or may not be able to handle of of that going on, especially if clothing like capes and cloaks are free flowing, and not static I also wish for class specific armors, not like in Too Human where it was just classified as the armor for the class, but I want it to bolster the strengths of that class, pad the weaknesses of that class, be for that class (obviously) and actually look different The one thing I hated about uniques (loot, class armor, etc.) was that it would look exactly the same, but just do something different, one perfect example are the unique weapons in Fallout 3 Customization makes an RPG a true game in which you role play a free-formed character and have bits and pieces of you instilled in a digital realm that lets other players recognize who you are when you drop into a game

          • First off if anyone says why do we need AAs and space magic in Destiny should just not buy the game and spare us the crybabery about whatever Traveler Power Armor Lock Ability is itching their shorts at any given moment because some kid got them with it in PVP. It's not Halo. It's not a damn Arena game where everyone gets one rifle and camps a hill holding down the Sniper Rifle. It'll have competitive aspects for sure but lets nix the whole focus on giving everyone across the board to PVE a basic tube and the best at hopping wins. Bungie said Space Magic and a Co-Operative Social game, so embrace your inner Gandalf and embrace your inner Indiana Jones and get your AAs on. I like all your ideas OP, I just hope everyone can sorta shuffle on by the whole "It's Not Halo enough" because of AAs or Magic, because you're right it's not Halo... it's Destiny.

I've commented on several threads in the past at how the majority of any playerbase is casual and they CAN and WILL go elsewhere if such a system is implemented. For a hardcore like me, yah. I'd love that. But by and large the playerbase would find a gank system dispicable and absolutely no fun, especially in the context of an Action-FPS where there will be those few players that have biological auto-aim (AKA ridiculous skill) and will never be beaten. Destiny is going to be a COOPERATIVE game in the large, open-world; with a connected, but still seperate, competitive multiplayer aspect. Don't mix your PVP and your PVE kids. People complain.

            • I agree with all things said, customization in any game helps add to it's longevity. I think you could take it a step farther in terms of the customization. If the game is as large as some have hinted, a universe with a vast number of worlds to be visited; then the customization, and system it follows has to go with the same trend. I hope this game takes a much more RPG styled loot system as opposed to the typical FPS customization menus. In a world so massive, it doesn't make sense for your character to simply level up and magically receive new weapons and armor. Having a system where you grind for upgrades or other customizations (and I know they have mentioned raids before) makes sense. Taking this a step farther, there should be very specific items, or traits, set to specific worlds. If I'm looking for a rifle with a large magazine size and high rate of fire I should know that a certain world specializes in this, and I go there. If I want an armor piece of high durability and mobility is of no concern, I should know to go to the volcanic world where these type of items are specialized. (This is all with the assumption that these types of stats are in the game, but no matter, something to this degree) I think the factions should play a part in the aesthetics of the weapons/armor that you find. Specific 'quest' related rewards you receive should follow a theme based on the faction you are in. Not every weapon you pick up but the ones given to you. Having this type of a system would be incredible for both the players, and Bungie. DLC could come in the form of solar systems or planets, coming with a specific new set of items along with it. The DLC could not be the planets themselves, but additions to your ship that allow you to reach these zones. But that's for another topic. I really think Bungie could hide some really neat items in specific areas for us to find with this type of system. I'm imagining a IWHBYD type process to get yourself something really cool in a certain area.

I'd like to see the flames return. I know not everyone liked armour effects, but they were there (in Reach) and you didn't have to use them. I also know you may have only noticed a different helmet here or there during a game and not much else. But in theatre you noticed the different armours and in the screenshot that were taken.
