What type of talent tree system would you like to see implemented?

There have been several interesting takes on a talent tree or skill progression in gaming over the last few years. Path of exile comes to mind for a long term player progression. The instant changeability of the Diablo III system The 3 tree version that WoW uses What would you like to see, and how would you like it implemented?

    Here are a few things that come to mind: - Skills should be [u]permanent[/u] (no re-spec ability) - They would [u]not affect a player in "Faction Wars"[/u] - PvP should be a level playing field (with the obvious exception of aesthetics, and I could go on for days about the potential here) - I would like to see at least [u]6-8 variances[/u] of each class. As in, my Hunter could eventually reach the end of a "branch" and have a specific title based on my choice of skill tree. Even with only 4 classes, this would allow for 26-32 different player-types to interact with throughout the universe. - [u]Non-combat-based skill sets[/u] - vehicle stats (+ %armor on ships), squad stats (all squad speed increase), exploration stats (better loot chances), etc. - Overall, a very [u]complex[/u] skill tree would be nice. I know they want to cater to all audiences, but it would be possible to show a skill tree of what [i]should[/i] be followed while still allowing an advanced player to really strategize with their skill choices. Hopefully that wasn't overbearing. I have a lot of ideas...

      My two cents on the subject would be give both players what they want. Set up as something like this. Option 1: Auto spec- As you play you don't get an option to add skills to certain areas. They are just done as you play. Using a sniper in auto spec? Way it works is it levels it how you use it. If your taking time then firing your accuracy and damage automatically increases. Firing away all willy nilly, reload speed and fire rate goes up. etc etc. Option 2: Self spec- The player gets a notification on screen and is allowed to add to it then and there or at a lil later time. Basiclly ok im shooting a sniper. Alright i like damage increase and reload speed ill use those first. etc etc. Just my ideas on how it should be done. Also in the PvP and only in PvP all the specs get turned off automatically. This allows for fairer play across the board. Allow re-spec but in the form of in game cash or actual real life money. This allows for the poor folk or the ones who can't afford for extra money to do something as simple as re-spec in a game when they can buy food or something in reality. Both options are chooseable from the start screen when you first start and as well as in game when you hit thepause button and in settings. This way everything is as even as possible. At least in my head it is.

    • I kinda like the way Borderlands does it, where you have three skill trees, only enough levels (and skill points) to get through one and a half, and you equip class mods (specializations) that enhance skills you've chosen and different stats. It allows for a ton of variety within each class. Regardless, I trust Bungie and I'm sure whatever they've come up with will be better than our wildest dreams. I just wish they would tell us already! I'm incredibly impatient.

    • None. I don't want to see any sort of talent tree in Destiny. That sort of stuff can stay in WoW.

      • As much as The Old Republic did wrong, one thing I did like was the skill tree system. You would pick a class and somewhere along the skill tree progression you picked a specialization. Hypothetically, in Destiny you could choose the assault class, a regular ground pounding foot soldier for starters with a few general abilities, but after a while you are asked to commit to either the medic spec with healing abilities or the vanguard spec with shielding abilities for tanking (examples). This would promote class distinction and diversity by effectively doubling the possible classes for the player to choose.

          I hope it isn't the typical skill tree, that stuff is boring and you HAVE to stick to one thing to "get good bro". I hope there isn't a skill tree, but a Skyrim style type of progression. Want to be a sniper? Then as you use long range weapons, your sniper skill levels with it.

          • Whatever weapon you use, you rank up in that skill department. No commitments classes beside the basic ones that were already revealed.

              One where we can eventually unlock everything if we play enough, unlike how Skyrim limits you to a smaller selection, despite hundreds of hours of playing and leveling.

              • I think Skyrim has the best progression system and I think you should work work towards class specific specializations. Example, a hunter could become a full on Sniper, a saboteur who relies on preemptive thinking and ambushes, an infiltrator who relies on stealth and hit-and-run tactics, or an assassin who specializes in attacking a singular enemy with great damage. I think there should be no perks and that abilities should be based on the equipment used. If you wanted a active camo type ability you would have to use a piece of armor that achieves that effect. Specializations would give you passive boosts like a Sniper would have increased critical point damage, a saboteur would have a bonus suprise attack damage, an assassin would have increased damage when focused on a single tareget, and an infiltrator would have increased stealth.

                  I like Borderlands 2 skill trees a great deal, yet my experience with RPGs limits me to pulling from only Borderlands, Deus Ex, KOTOR, Too Human and Dead Island.

                  • I really just want something where you can adjust your own stats and skills similar to the Kotor games or something like wow where there are specific tiers and you choose from a specific set of passives that affect your abilities or new abilities in general. I feel that it would be nice if they stuck with something simple and didn't do anything too crazy. Not because I am some super casual player but because I have personally had enough with super complex trees that don't really add much and simply are cookie cut into specs that you find online. So what I recommend is something similar to wow's current talent design because it is simple, but not only that because you can't cookie cut it and the choices that you make can be pretty big to how it affects the utility of your class and more or less relies on personal preference. TL;DR Keep it simple but have the choices that you make have a big impact on your characters utility. Just my two cents but I of course also would like to see something different. Who knows maybe they will create something new with talents.

                  • I want it to be similar to Skyrim's skill trees. However, I want it to have more depth and less exploitability. I want the skill trees to have a lot of options so I can tailor and combine perks to suit my preferred play styles.

                      Here's my two cents. I understand they want to keep a simple skill system but considering they have at least a ten year plan for destiny I would hope they cater to the hardcore gamer rather than a gamer who buys the game plays it for awhile then moves on when the next big game when it releases. I hope they go with a skill tree that can as simple or advanced depending on the user. It would tailor to both casual and hardcore gamers alike. My hope is a combination of skyrim and borderlands.

                      I would love to see something similar to Skyrim where you earn progression points by using types of weapons, armor, or abilities. It gives the player a more natural adaptation to their play-style. Faction specific talents would be cool too.

                      • I'll list my hopes for the skill tree: - In-Depth. I want the ability to build my character in a way that PERFECTLY suits my playstyle. Somewhat of a combination of Mass Effect and Skyrim. - Co-Op only. Competitive should be fair ground for players new and old. (Also eliminates the "Best Build" mentality) - Effects more than combat. Abilities that effect my vehicular performance as well as maybe crafting/weapon modding. - Respec. This isn't exactly a hope, but it'll definietly be there. This is the kind of thing that would be permanent, but provides an opportunity for Bungie to have a micro transaction that would let you respec (We all know Destiny will have microtransactions) - Friendly GUI. Streamlined and easy to navigate. That's pretty much it. Everything else I want as been aforementioned.

                      • I'm not certain that Destiny is going to be nearly as RPG-like as some of you make it out to be. But for the sake of discussion, what sort of specific skills would you expect players to be able to choose?

                          I think whatever skill system component Bungie puts in the game will be far too simple to analogate to a tree. Their comments about being accessible imply something extremely simple, staying away from a deeply involved skill system.

                          • Dear god, if this is an advancement of a Call of Duty theme, let me off at the next stop. I was hoping for customization in skill-set, weaponry, gear.... Stuff that grows with you as you move through the game. If we are going to go the next ten years attaching red dot sights and under barrel shotguns/ grenade launchers I will feel very let down by this game. I actually like Rob's idea that you level skills as you use them similar to Skyrim, a system that rewards sticking to your original build plan, but doesn't make it where you can not at least try new things.

                          • I don't think WoW invented the 3 tree system but it's simple and it works while usually providing decent variety of builds.
