Your opinion on people who get "welfare"?

We're talking about people who need it. Me and my mother live off my fathers death benefits. Basically it's what's keeping us alive considering she's disabled and no one wants to hire a 16 year old. I don't really see how some people thrive on government aid thought, the 1,600 we get only covers rent and my mothers scripts. Discuss your feelings towards people who receive government aid.

  • The funny thing is that you call it "government aid when most people call it "entitlements" which is not what they are supposed to be. *thumbs up*

As with most government programs, it could probably be made more efficient. But I have no problem with welfare or the people on it.

    • Anyone who says that welfare is an incentive to not find a job... prove it, please. Using the scientific method, prove that people who live in places where welfare is an option will consistently refuse the opportunity to be employed.

      • If you need it, fine. Take it and get back on your feet. If you abuse it, hit the road. We need more people propelling the country forward, not dragging it down.

      • If people don't abuse it and actually need it, fine. However I know of too many young girls in my town who had a child, got on welfare, put their kids on their parents, goes out like a teenage with no responsibilities and gets paid for it.

      • Depends on the individual, its the people who use welfare as an excuse to not work that get me.

      • If you genuinely need it, I got no problem paying for it and wouldn't feel ashamed of it at all. As a society, we all have to pitch in every once in a while to help each other out.

        • If you genuinely need it, then I don't look down on you or anything. It's the people that abuse it that bother me.

          • Terrible people. We should recycle those people and make new people.

            • Reading through the comments... Some of you are talking about unemployment. That's not welfare. Its not entirely government assistance as you pay into it from every check... Just wanted to point that out.

I'm strongly in favor of welfare in any society. There has been a sustained and systematic attack on those on welfare for a generation now, which come to a particular head around the discourses that are used by politicians and particularly right wing public commentators. Think about the language that is used to describe those on welfare? It's not talking about those who are disadvantaged - it's largely descriptive with very negative connotations, those who are "Milking" the system, abusing it, scroungers, liars. I completely accept there are going to be those who fall into that categorization however the brush that is used to tar those in need completely skews public perception of who are often the most vulnerable and at risk in our societies. The system needs an overhaul; and that will not be done by the constant attacks on those who need it most.

              • Some need it but I think it should be reduced across the board. Any welfare is a huge disincentive to go find a job or improve your situation. We should not have unemployment insurance for two years, it should be two months at most.

                • I have no negative feelings at all, unless someone is fully able to work and refuses a job interview or job offer. I'm currently applying for Unemployment Insurance and working very limited part-time as my main job is seasonal and I haven't gotten another for the winter yet. The safety net exists to keep people the necessities of life, not to provide them luxury. Anyone who tells you otherwise just hates poor people.

                • Some need it. Most abuse it IMO. Maybe 70 percent abuse it in some form according to my opion

                  • I wonder how your mom will feel when you turn 18 and she no longer gets money from Social Security because you are an adult. I'm assuming you collect social security surivor's benefits, widower's benefits only go to spouses age 60 or older, which I doubt applies to your family.

                    • When I was a kid my mother was on it. She was a single mom with three boys. You do what you have to. I guarantee that anyone who rails on about welfare fraud has never had to be humiliated by paying with food stamps in a grocery store.
