•
When you split a 16:9 screen in half you get two 32:9 pictures. Anyone who played halo 2 can tell you the FOV is too wide, and you also can't see someone trying to get the jump on you from above. Equally so, the side to side ratio would be 8:9, taller than it is wide, meaning the FOV isn't wide enough to see to your sides....by squeezing the viewport into a more aestetically pleasing ratio, it actually improves the gaming experience. You aren't losing anything here, believe me. It has nothing to do with 640p or the frame rate or anything technical. Bungie was giving us the best FOV possible by doing this.
The black bars on either side are a bummer. It would be really nice if, at least in Campaign, you could have a full-width split screen. Really, the only good answer is for everyone to have their own 50" HDTV, Xbox 360, and copy of Halo 3 Legendary. Split screen play is an ugly solution no matter how you look at it. Even so, the current solution feels like a problem when you first see it. And, even after you get used to it, if you make the mistake of putting Gears of War back in your Xbox the black bars in Halo 3 bum you out all over again. [Edited on 10.01.2007 8:59 AM PDT]
